ZEROtherm has made the 775 solution just as simple. (As simple as a 775 mount can be, anyway.) Captive screws with spring tensioners and a rugged steel backplate will make for a solid mount, but you'll have to remove your motherboard to install this.
The BTF95 installed on my DFI SLI-DR mobo without a hitch. It came very close to the nearest memory stick, but they don't touch each other. Users should keep in mind that other components around the socket benefit from airflow normally created by the CPU cooling fan, which will be absent here.
I've tested all the coolers in the comparison in the bare frame pictured above. This eliminates any effects that a case might introduce. Keep in mind that temps inside your case will be different, depending on the case and airflow. This is particularly true of a fanless cooler. Frankly, I would expect passive coolers to perform a little better in a case with good airflow in the CPU area than in the open frame.
The following parameters were used throughout testing:
• Arctic Silver 5 TIM used on all coolers.
• Ambient temperature kept at a constant 21C.
• Each cooler allowed to burn-in at maximum heat setting with Prime95 for two hours to partially set the thermal paste. The computer was then shut down for
• Idle temperatures were recorded after one hour of zero load after booting to the desktop.
• Load temperatures were recorded after two hours of maximum heat torture testing using Prime95.
• Idle and load temperatures were recorded at stock CPU speed (2.2 Ghz.) and at an overclock approaching 25% (2.7 Ghz.). Vcore was raised by 0.1V (from 1.4V to 1.5V) during the overclocking runs.
The following components were installed in the open test frame:
- AMD Opteron 148 processor
- DFI Lanparty UT nF4 SLI-DR motherboard
- eVGA 7900GS-KO
- OCZ 5002048ELGE-K (1024mb X 2) memory
- Thermaltake Toughpower 1000W PSU
- Western Digital WD800 SATA hard drive
- LG DVD-RW Combo drive
After several hours of testing, here are the results:
* With the recommended Panaflo 92mm fan (FBL09A12M, 2450 RPM, 48 CFM, 30dBA)
Well, I'll have to admit that the BTF95 performed better than I thought it would. It bested the Spire Fourier (the only other passive cooler in the comparison) by a significant margin, and was able to stand up to some moderate overclocking, as well. For a passive cooler, I think the performance is quite good. After all, silence will always come with a performance penalty. I also tested the cooler in a sideways orientation, like you would find in most PC cases, and found the any performance gained by this to be so slight as to be virtually negligible. In both positions, the fins became noticeably hot to the touch, indicating that the cooler was doing its job. Let me reiterate that the cooling performance of this, (or any passive cooler, for that matter,) will be directly related to the airflow through the chassis it's mounted in. I also want to mention that, from past experience, I would expect the included thermal compound to knock around 1-2C off the above temperatures. I don't know what this stuff is, but I wish I could get a supply of it.
