PRODUCT PICTORIAL AND WALKTHROUGH
…the Fan Mate 2 speed controller. This has been shipping with many Zalman coolers for some time now, and it is a very versatile item that can be mounted inside or outside the case with the included adhesive hook-and-loop strip.
The base is finished with a mirror polish that reflects Mr. Bones' countenance admirably. More importantly, it should provide very good heat transfer as well.
Zalman has done an excellent job with the mounting solution. While the Intel socket adapter on the left resembles the previous iteration, this newer version has two lugs which interface with the spring clip in much the same way as the AMD retention bracket. Intel users will still have to remove the motherboard to install the 8700 LED, but AMD users only need to use the spring clip, and installation can likely occur with the board still in the case. I'm a big fan of simple, easy designs like this and I really like this one.
PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING
For this review, I've chosen a DFI Infinity P965-S motherboard coupled with an Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Allendale processor (overclocked to 2.4 GHz, +0.1 Vcore.) The other components are listed below.
- eVGA 7900GS KO graphics card with Thermalright cooler
- Buffalo Firestix PC2-6400 (1024mb X 2) memory
- Zalman ZM600-HP heatpipe modular 600 Watt PSU
- Western Digital Raptor 740 SATA hard drive
- Samsung DVD-RW SATA drive
With the backplate under the board, the retention bracket can be secured with four screws. The instruction sheet is quite good and by following the illustrated guides, the bracket can be oriented properly. After a thorough cleaning with alcohol, a thin coat of Arctic Silver 5 can be applied to the processor.
