XFX HD 6970 INTRODUCTION

The release of AMD's new single-GPU flagship HD 6970 is just in time for the 2010 holiday season and thus allows consumers to ponder whether their current HD 5800 videocard is still technically relevant, or whether it is time for an upgrade.

With new features such as Enhanced Quality Anti-aliasing, Morphological Filtering and PowerTune Technology, all of which are not enabled by default, AMD sets out to allow the power user to adjust and enhance the gaming quality and/or performance to meet their current gaming needs with less of a performance hit on their current gaming configuration. Whether or not you will be utilizing these features is up to you and AMD has chosen not to force gamers to use these new enhancements, and allow them to try them out and see if it suits their needs.

Through a mixture of synthetic and real world gaming performance benchmarking in DirectX 9, DirectX 10 and tessellation enhanced DirectX 11 environments, we are hoping to lay out on the table whether or not upgrading will be a smart decision. Numbers do not lie and through testing we will see if this card should be in your shopping cart, or whether the card you have on hand might still be a product you can hang on to for a while longer.

XFX has been kind enough to allow us to test their reference-based version of the HD6970 in our lab. Let's see how this card works out..... The reviews continues on Page 2 .
