Introduction

Everyone will remember about 6 months to about a year ago, to obtain the best overclock, you had to have the best cooling. In marched in the powerful deltas, the ys-tech's, the ADDA's and Sunon's like a roaring ear-splitting group of air moving gladiators. The quiet, yet efficient days of computing for most of the elite were dead. Everyone was boasting of computer rigs pumping through 200+ cfm of air. For god sakes, you could pretty well heat a room with the damn things in wintertime. Over time, the room filling roar un-nerved the computer user, ticked off his/her spouse/mate (gotta be politically correct here =)), and just got plain annoying. Ding, dong!, the days of the roaring power rig are dead. Cpu's are capable of handling higher temperature environments, cpu's themselves are running cooler and everything is starting to get allot more efficient. But, don't get me wrong, there has to be air-flow through the case still, but just not as much. This enables people to now digress to the age of about a year ago and install some of there older, yet quieter, case fans kicking around in their closet again. Vantec, picking up on the new "Quiet trend" of today, released an even quieter case fan series to aid in the healing of your ringing ear drums, the Vantec Stealth Case Fan series. "Stealth" by definition by The Oxford Desk Dictionary (American Edition) states that the meaning of stealth is the designing of an object or device to foil detection by any sensory means (aka ears!!). Let's just see if Vantec's new case fan line holds up to their chosen name...

The Actual Fan's

The Stealth fan line is comprised of 3 sizes of fan:

The 60mm Variety: Model# SF6025L

Fan Properties:

Dimensions: 60x60x25mm
Rated Voltage: 12V
Power Input: 0.96W
Fan Speed: 2600rpm
Air Flow: 12cfm
Noise: 20dBa
Bearing Type: Double Ball Bearing (For long life and low noise, hence STEALTH!)

This fan is absolutely silent except for a small, very unnoticeable whisper of the airflow and electric motor noise. I really had to focus my hearing hard to even hear it.

The 80mm Variety: Model# SF8025L

Fan Properties:

Dimensions: 80x80x25mm
Rated Voltage: 12V
Power Input: 1.2W
Fan Speed: 2050rpm
Air Flow: 27cfm
Noise: 21dBa
Bearing Type: Double Ball Bearing (For longlife and low noise, hence STEALTH!)

The 80mm variety boasted a mere ear-blistering 1dBa increase in noise which was noticeable to an extent but I could still detect a mouse farting in the corner of my room under a blanket =). Damn mouse!!!

The 92mm Variety: Model# SF9225L

Fan Properties:

Dimensions: 92x92x25mm
Rated Voltage: 12V
Power Input: 0.84W
Fan Speed: 1750rpm
Air Flow: 28cfm
Noise: 20dBa
Bearing Type: Double Ball Bearing (For longlife and low noise, hence STEALTH!, and detecting rodents =))

Now the 92mm is REALLY silent, like the 60mm variety minus the whisper of the airflow. I wouldn't be surprised if the dBa reading for this fan is a little off. Now it's airflow in my opinion is a little low. This is a 92mm fan we have here. I think the airflow could be pumped up to 30-35cfm with maybe a 2-3dba increase. Which still would be undetectable when compared to the other fans [see the 92mm Fan performance comparison review here]
