The specifications and features speak for themselves and are pretty much what one would expect from an Ultra Products power supply. A massive single +12V rail, great efficiency and a plethora of modular connectors coupled with 850-watts of power make for an attractive package. Let’s take a moment to discuss the 80 PLUS certification. To quote from the website (see it HERE,) “80 Plus is an innovative, electric utility-funded incentive program to integrate more energy-efficient power supplies into desktop computers and servers. Participating utilities and energy efficiency organizations across North America have contributed over $5 million of incentives to help the computer industry transition to 80 PLUS certified power supplies.”

To achieve the 80Plus certification, the PSU must demonstrate 80% or better efficiency at 20%, 50% and 80% of the rated capacity. In 2008 Bronze, Silver and Gold categories were added and the corresponding efficiency benchmarks are listed above. 80Plus certified power supplies, when compared to less efficient PSUs, will generally be quieter while producing less heat, have higher quality components and save you a little money on your electric bill. However, the money saved is unlikely to offset the higher cost of an 80Plus unit, as the savings calculator on the 80Plus website shows. Nevertheless, for me, the lower temps, quieter operation and quality components found in 80Plus power supplies make up for the extra cost, in most cases. This Ultra offering is rated 80Plus Silver.

PRODUCT COMPOSITION

The retail carton is large and informative with all the sales-speak prominently displayed on all sides, just like most PSU boxes from most every distributor. Inside, it’s a bit of a different story. The components are all well packaged and, as we’ll see later, there are a large number of included accessories and the feature set is equally impressive. The manual is right on top as you open the box and this one actually has some useful information. Curiously, I was unable to find any information regarding PFC rating in the manual, or anywhere else for that matter.

Inside the retail carton there is a big box-o-cables, the X4 PSU, some black zip-ties and a black silicone anti-vibration gasket. Ultra also includes two sets of screws to mount the X4 in the case of your choice. One set is the typical silver colored items you would normally find, along with some black thumbscrews. I prefer to mount a PSU with thumbscrews in my builds and it’s good to see this little addition.
