PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING

Depending on the type of processor, the stock back plate may or may not have to be removed for installation of the universal retention frame. I will be installing the Orb on a socket 754 system which can use the stock back plate. For some AM2 boards the back plate included with the Orb will need to be installed. For LGA775 boards the four included push pins secure the retention frame in place.

Once the retention frame is installed, one end of the mounting arm is hooked underneath a clip. The opposite end is tightened down on the screw with the thumb nut. It was really easy although required a decent amount of force to secure.

With the Orb installed and ready to go, let's see how it performs.

For testing, here's the system I used. I did not install the motherboard in a case so keep in mind temps will vary depending on airflow inside a case.

-A64 3200+ processor
-DFI Lanparty nF3 250 GB motherboard
-2 x 512Mb Patriot PC3200
-Radeon X800 XT PE
-2 x WD800JD in Raid 0
-NEC ND-3520A DVD-RW
-Lite-On XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM
-Antec 500W PSU

The conditions I used during testing are:

- Room temperature was kept at a constant 20C.
- Artic Silver 5 thermal paste used.
- Idle temps were recorded after the PC had been sitting for one hour under zero load.
- Load temps were recorded after two hours of torture testing with Prime95.
- Temps were recorded first at stock speed (2.2GHz) and then again after overclocked (2.5GHz).
- Since the Max Orb has an adjustable fan, temps were also recorded on both the lowest fan speed and then the highest.

Stock cooler results:

Stock Speed

Load

CPU

38C

50C

Overclocked

Idle

42C

53C

Low fan speed (1300 rpm):

Stock Speed

33C

45C

Overclocked

37C

48C

High fan speed (2000 rpm):

46C

What can I say? The temps speak for themselves. The Max Orb has great cooling even after an overclock and I should also mention the fan is reasonably quiet even at the highest speed.
