THERMALTAKE BLACX INTRODUCTION

Up until just a couple of years ago, adding a hard drive to your system required opening up the case, messing around with screws and washers, re-jigging your PSU wiring, and twisting an IDE cable around to plug into the new drive. No more!

External hard drives have slowly become more mainstream, in either pre-configured units or simple enclosures for you to add your own HDD to. Prices vary from a minimal $20 for an empty enclosure to a whopping $1500 for a unit with 2 TB of drives already installed. Which one you choose is up to your needs (and your budget).

There used to be a few drawbacks to an external enclosure. Installing a drive still required screws and washers, the enclosure itself lacked adequate cooling, and you were limited to a USB connection. Lately, though these limitations have been removed, making a new enclosure a better bang for your buck.

Today, I'm taking a look at Thermaltake's BlacX HDD dock. Unlike a regular enclosure, the BlacX uses a neat docking system. Let's see how well it performs, and if it's worth your hard-earned cash.
