PRODUCT PICTORIAL AND WALKTHROUGH

Thecus has refined the look of their NAS units since I last reviewed one, and I like the changes. The aluminum case is attractive and there is now a swing out door that exposes the drive cage.

The blue LCD as well as the navigation buttons haven’t changed much from previous models. Orange indicator lights for hard drives, LAN and WAN line the bottom of this area. There’s also a USB 2.0 port here on the front, but you have to open the door to access it.

Around back we have the cooling fan, LAN and WAN ports, USB port, eSATA port, and port for the power adapter. There is also an expansion slot, but I was not able to find any of its possible uses while reading the manual (this is true of other Thecus NAS units also).

Four small rubber pads are located on the bottom to stabilize the NAS. These work well in my experience, especially after installing hard drives since they add extra weight to the unit.
Now that we’ve taken a look at the outside of the N0503, let’s visit the front of the unit again and take a closer look at how to access the inside.

The swing out door exposes the drive cage and in order to power the unit on, this door must be opened (it doesn’t lock). All other buttons are still accessible with the door closed. As you can see, the NAS is already set up to accept 2.5” drives.
