PRODUCT PICTORIAL AND WALKTHROUGH (cont'd)

Around back, we can get a view of two 80mm exhaust fans as well as a couple of USB ports, an Ethernet port, and an eSATA port. Also take note of the four thumbscrews here – that's how to access the inside.

Once the thumbscrews are removed, the rear door flips down to reveal the inside. There are four trays for your 3.5” or 2.5” SATA hard drives.

I was a bit surprised to find plastic HDD trays on this otherwise high end NAS - I'm used to working with aluminum trays on most NAS units. The trays are easy to take out though, you just pull each one straight out. No tools needed.

Inside the unit we can see a small motherboard with a 1.67GHz dual-core CPU and 1GB RAM stick. The RAM has a sticker on it warning about voiding the warranty if the sticker is resealed.
With the walkthrough complete, we are ready to move on to installation and testing. Let's see what this offering from Synology can really do.
PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING

Each HDD tray will accept either a 3.5” or 2.5” SATA drive. No matter what size drive you use, it's just a matter of securing each one to its respective tray. Once that is complete, the unit can be closed up and powered on.
