For a more complete listing of the extensive specifications of the DS107e, visit Synology's website HERE . We can gather from this information that the DS107e can do, well, a hell of a lot. A wide variety of server functions, storage expansion, backup functionality for many devices and security features all add up to a very useful network appliance. I'm feeling a little out of my element here, but I'm hoping this baby won't be as complicated to get up and running as the feature set seems to indicate. There's a lot of stuff to digest here.

Users will have to supply their own SATA hard drive, and Synology provides a list of supported drives. The manual lists support for SATA drives up to 1TB for the DS107e, and the website contains the following support information, for what it's worth. “So far, we haven't experienced any incompatibility between hard drives purchased for testing and Synology Product. Therefore, in addition to those hard drive models listed below, you could try to use other hard drive models. However, according to our overall experience, we recommend you to use hard drives from Western Digital.”

PRODUCT COMPOSITION

The DS107e comes in a rather unassuming white retail carton describing its various functions. Don't be fooled by the rather plain carton, there's a real powerhouse inside.

Inside we find the enclosure (again, no hard drive is included,) the power adapter and cord, an RJ-45 LAN cable, installation CD, manual and some screws. There are also short data and power cables that I'll show you during installation.
