PRODUCT COMPOSITION

Pricing for a diskless DS212 is currently $300 US from online retailers. My review sample arrived safely with help from some careful packaging by Synology.

Everything you need to get up and running is provided right out of the box. This includes a power adapter and cable, Ethernet cable, quick start guide, installation screws, and a setup CD that includes various utilities as well as a detailed manual.

PRODUCT PICTORIAL AND WALKTHROUGH

Cosmetically, the DS212 looks slightly different from past Synology units that Tweaknews has reviewed. It's roughly the same size, but the color has changed from white to black and a plastic plate covers a section of the front.

That shiny cover plate pops off to reveal the two drive bays. Pressing a tab at the top releases each tray, allowing quick access to your hard drives. This design is a big improvement over the older models the days of opening the case with a screwdriver are gone.
