PRODUCT PICTORIAL AND WALKTHROUGH

Cosmetically, the DS211j looks nearly identical to some of the previous Synology units reviewed here at Tweaknews (the DS209 and DS210j come to mind). They all sport the same white plastic case and similar front panel layouts. All in all, the DS211j is a very nice looking unit.

Looking in closer on the front, we have various indicator lights. The “status” LED indicates power, “LAN” will blink during network activity, and each hard drive has a respective indicator as well. There's a USB port for adding an external device and a USB Copy button below it (more on this later). Rounding out this area is a power button that sports a blue LED.

On the bottom are four rubber feet to stabilize the unit and a notch that indicates whether the case is open or not. After the two screws on the back are removed, half the case will slide forward and can be removed.

At the back is a 70mm cooling fan, two more USB ports, and a LAN port. A tiny reset button is also here in the event you need to restore all settings back to factory default. Note the two screw holes in the upper right and lower right corners – I've removed them in order to access the inside.
Let's move on to installation and testing to see what this NAS can do.
