PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING

My DS210j review sample came with two Seagate 500GB hard drives pre-installed. However, I'm still going to document the process of installing drives for those of you who decide to purchase a diskless unit.

After opening the case, you are greeted with two trays for the hard drives to attach to. Remember that 2.5” drives are also supported, but an adapter for each drive must be purchased separately if you go that route.

Each drive simply slides on to the connectors on the tray; there are no cables to plug in. Then each drive must be secured to its respective tray by using four screws (two on each side). Once that is complete, configuration can begin.

After the DS-210j is powered on, the next step is to insert the included setup CD into your computer. There are several useful items on this CD, including a full manual that I would recommend going through before beginning.

Clicking on the “Set up the Synology Server” link brings up a screen with the name, IP address, and status of the system. Since my review unit came with drives installed, the initial configuration had already been completed so I can go right to the web interface

The interface has an intuitive layout with a folder tree structure on the left side, similar to that of Windows Explorer. Let's check out some of the settings and features.
