CONCLUSIONS AND AFTERTHOUGHTS
If you are in need of an external card reader/USB hub combo and don't want to spend a lot of money, Spire's CombiPod fits the bill perfectly. It is small, durable, compatible with just about any memory card, and best of all it works exactly as it should. The two USB ports are handy to have too for plugging in a flash drive or digital camera. The unit gets its power from the USB bus on your PC, so there's no separate power adapter to worry about. In the event you do need extra juice, the CombiPod also has a port for a 5V power adapter. You will have to buy that adapter separately, but if you use a lot of power-hungry devices it will be a necessary purchase.
Even though this is a very simple to use product, especially for power users and enthusiasts, I wish Spire would have included a manual. You never know when you might have a question or problem and need to refer to the instructions. On the other hand, Spire does offer a three year warranty on the CombiPod which is much longer than the typical one year warranty found with many similar products. Despite the lack of documentation I still feel that due to the ease of use, convenient design, good performance, and extended warranty period, the CombiPod deserves the Tweaknews Top Rank award.
