The memory page is quite useful especially in older operating systems. The page enables the user to monitor memory and page file usage via graphs. The ability to free up memory is what makes the page so important. Similar to programs like MemTurbo(tm), SpeedUpMyPC allows the user to set the program to automatically free memory when it reaches a certain percentage of used memory. SpeedUpMyPC features two types of memory recovery, shallow and deep. The shallow memory recovery takes much less time and only clears larger unused items from the memory, while the deep recovery clears the large items, but also smaller items, doing a much more thorough job.
The internet page sports two graphs, both showing bandwidth usage; one at 1 minute intervals, the other at 1 hour intervals. The ability to detect net speed and optimize internet settings allows users to get the most out of their internet connection. This is especially useful to those of you running on sub 56k connections, who need every little bit of bandwidth they can get.
On the startup page, there are two different tables. The first table shows a record of startup times since the programs install. The lower table shows all of the startup items available and how long it takes each one to run up at system start. Using the Optimize Startup Settings, it is possible to remove any and all unwanted startup items, therefore decreasing startup time.
The final page in the side menu is the Anti-Crash page. Although Windows XP and 2000 aren't likely to crash on you, 98 and 98SE have a tendency to crash on occasion, that's why this menu will be of particular interest to 98 and 98SE users. When ever the system does crash, if SpeedUpMyPC is running, the user has the ability to use the hot key combination to terminate any suspicious tasks and restart the windows shell. This crash recovery in many cases will prolong the life of many systems running 98 and 98SE.
When running, SpeedUpMyPC stays in the task bar and shows the user CPU, memory, and internet usage via three solid bars. With the mouse over the taskbar icon it is possible to see the exact percentage of CPU, memory and internet usage. The internet usage bar is quite useful in the detection of spy software such as data miners. For if the user has no internet based programs running and the net usage hits 100%, there is a good chance that user has some sort of spy software.
