With a price tag falling around the range of US$4000, the LN55A950 is one of the most expensive LCD TVs on the market today. Though you should keep in mind that this TV is huge (55 inches) and has a feature list not seen on cheaper models. You have to pay to play with the big boys. But even so, prices on these are falling lower than US$3700 in some online stores and that price has dropped a lot from the original MSRP of US$5000 over four months ago.
The first thing you will have to realize is that this TV is large and thus, comes in an even larger product box. Getting this TV to your home will require at least two people and keep that second person around when you have to lift the TV itself up and onto a stand. Although LCD TVs are not as heavy as plasma TVs, it is still not something a single person can tackle. Huge TVs are awkward to lift. I can deadlift over 550lbs and I still had issues grunting and squeaking trying to get this up on the stand myself. Don't be stupid like me.
As always you will receive a manual along with a quick setup guide, a set of RF suppression line magnets along with a trim piece that can be installed in place of the removed stand if you plan to wall mount the unit. Other than that, you will receive a power cable.
With this generation of TVs, Samsung chose to use its newer remote control which has larger backlit keys and a glossy black finish. Although these are improvements, the overall feel of the remote is cheap and has the aesthetics of a universal remote you pick up at a dollar store. But hey, this could be just my personal tastes.
And at last with some help you can perch your new TV up on your stand for all to admire. First impressions are that this is an extremely well built and stable TV. Even though it is a little heavy (93lbs), it is remarkably stiff with no flex from thin housing materials. Also, even though Samsung says this TV follows their "Touch of Color" ToC design, I couldn't see any color at all. What I did see was an extremely glossy plastic surround and a glossy LCD panel screen coating Samsung calls their "Ultra Clear Panel". This has some benefits in some viewing experience, but in a bright room, you can see it can become a problem. *My dog is looking at you, he senses evil.*
