PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING

Either IE version 6.0 or higher or Mozilla Firefox can be used to access the administration page. It can be customized by placing shortcuts to frequently accessed functions such as the Web Server and Multimedia Station. Furthermore, placing a check in the SSL login box provides secure access to the NAS from the web.

Before copying a bunch of files to the NAS, it's a good idea to check out the status of the hard drives. A summary page shows the status of each drive, and a quick test can be run to check for any errors. Some other basic info like the model number, capacity, and temperature are also listed here.

Chances are good the NAS will be accessed by several users, so access to any folder can be controlled by configuring users and groups. Each user can be assigned their own home folder and quotas can be set up as well.

FTP service is enabled by default but can be easily disabled by clearing a check box. Most users will not need to change many settings here but there are options to limit the number of connections and their transfer rates, among other things. The more advanced settings will be useful in a larger network environment.

Plugging in a USB drive brings up some basic information about it, and it can be formatted right from this screen too. Pressing the one-touch copy button on the front of the NAS copies files from the USB drive to the NAS or vice versa, depending on how it's configured.
