CONCLUSIONS AND AFTERTHOUGHTS

Overall, this is an excellent showing from QNAP. In as little as one afternoon, it is possible to set up a network surveillance system that can be monitored from any computer with an internet connection. Video quality from the included cameras is impressive and additional cameras can be easily added to the system. Versatility is also a strong suit - cameras can use a wired or wireless connection, recording can take place on any day and time you wish, and external drives can be attached for backup or to increase storage capacity.

The interface on the NVR is easy to navigate but still offers advanced users the opportunity to tweak the settings to their liking. Even though there are a lot of settings that can be changed, I didn't find myself confused or having to search endlessly for what I was looking for. The straightforwardness of the system will be appreciated by both first time users and experts alike. This is the third product I've reviewed from QNAP and I have to say that they have developed the most user friendly interface, hands down.

My only dissatisfaction during testing was with the spotty wireless range of the cameras. I do not have a large house (830 sq. ft.) and the cameras still had problems maintaining a connection with a Linksys WRT54G router. Now the cameras and router were on different levels of the home, but other wireless equipment including laptops and gaming systems have not exhibited the same issue. I haven't ruled out a configuration problem with the router or some other kind of interference causing the cameras to lose their connection, but further testing will be needed to find that out for sure.

Pros:

- Easy installation
- Two cameras included
- Good video quality
- Excellent web interface
- Lots of configuration options

Cons:

- Poor wireless range on cameras
