LABTEC PULSETM-420 INTRODUCTION
I have owned a computer since 1995 and have bought, enjoyed, upgraded, overclocked, then sold about four or five personal computers. Everything has been changed except one thing, my speaker system. As most people would say, "Hey, my speakers are just fine!", or, "What's the point?". Well, I myself subscribed to that way of thinking for about seven years, yes, seven! With all my attention being focused on the internal components of my computer, speakers just was never a consideration. The original speakers were purchased with a system that contained a Creative(r) Sound Blaster 16 pci soundcard that did it's job well. But, with my continuous upgrades, I upgraded finally to a Sound Blaster Audigy Sound Card. At the time of purchase and installation, I wasn't all that impressed with the sound quality difference. As any consumer upgrading to a $150 soundcard, you would think that there would be a significant difference in audio quality. Well there was in fact a difference. The only problem is that I had an inferior speaker system to convey the clearer, and crisper audio quality of the Audigy(r) to my ear drums. Labtec(r) was kind enough to send me a sample of there new model of speaker system called the PulseTM-420 to take advantage of this quality sound card and show me what it can really do.
Now let's take a look as to what this small yet effective speaker system can bring to your workspace.
LABTEC COMPANY PROFILE
Founded in 1982, Labtec Inc. is a leading provider of high-technology peripherals and accessories for computing, communication and entertainment.
What does the Labtec PulseTM-420 Speaker System Entail?
-Headphone Jack for Private Listening
-Satellites can be Wall or Desk Mounted
-Wood Enclosed Subwoofer for Better Bass
-25 Watts of Crystal Clear Power (Trust me, these 25watts speak volumes)
What do I get with the purchase?
Two, neat looking satellites for your desktop.
The right satellite contains a headphone jack and the volume control. Now one thing that really kinda ticked me off is that the headphone jack volume is not controlled by the volume control, but by your soundcard software main volume control. I wish I knew that because I have the computer volume at full volume and control the volume through the speaker control for simplicity. But when I inserted my headphones to try it out, it blew my headphones. I was not impressed so everyone be warned >=(. Another problem with the headphone jack will be conveyed in the conclusions & afterthoughts.
One subwoofer for under your desk. (Tight working environment, I don't think this little subwoofer will give you any problems)
I am a bass freak. So, I had to give the subwoofer a little once over to see what made it tick. This particular subwoofer contains a 4inch, long throw, subwoofer contained within a solid wood sub-enclosure for smooth and distortion free low frequency response, and it responds well for a little guy. Just for kicks, I threw on a real bass-kicker just to see how long the throw on this subwoofer was. Well, I have to tell ya, if I wasn't holding the box in my hand, I wouldn't be surprised if the speaker may touch the ground on a couple of the bass strokes.
A single power supply for the whole system instead of hogging a separate power bar spot for the satellites and the woofer.
And, as with any purchase, you get an instruction guide and warranty registration card.
