CONCLUSIONS AND AFTERTHOUGHTS

Kingwin has a solid performer in the Z1. Ease of use, good looks, and choice of colors adds up to a winning combination. I had no problems installing a drive, and it was immediately recognized by Windows. Driverless installation makes things easy (except for you Windows 98 users…….c’mon, upgrade to XP at least, you luddites!).
All is not perfect, however. Lack of even a basic backup software program is disappointing, as is the lack of an E-SATA bracket. While I don’t expect high-end software at this price point, a bracket would only add a dollar or two to the price.
All in all, the Kingwin Z1 deserves a look, if you are in the market for an external HDD enclosure.
Pros
- Ease of installation
- Good looks
- Decent price
- Fast transfer speeds
Cons
- No backup software included
- No E-SATA bracket
- Finicky screw holes
