PRODUCT INSTALLATION AND TESTING

No drivers are required; the OS will detect the docking station (with attached drive) as a USB external storage device and install it automatically. Keep in mind that in order to get the fastest speeds possible, the dock must be attached to a USB 3.0 port.

For testing, the dock will be connected to a USB 3.0 port and a DVD image file that is 4.35 GB in size will be copied to a Western Digital 250GB 7200 RPM hard drive attached to the dock. Both read and write times will be recorded, and then the process will be repeated with the dock attached to a USB 2.0 port for comparison.

Before beginning, I first copied the file between two SATA II drives in my test PC running Windows XP SP3. It took 1 minute, 28 seconds. We can also make a note of this time for comparison.

Here are the results of the first test using USB 2.0:

4.35 GB File Transfer (USB 2.0)

Time (minutes:seconds)

Write to External Drive

2:07

Read from External Drive

2:04

And here are the results using USB 3.0:

4.35 GB File Transfer (USB 3.0)

Time (minutes:seconds)

Write to External Drive

1:19

Read from External Drive

1:19

Based on these results, it goes without saying that USB 3.0 is a worthwhile upgrade especially for those who do a lot of backups and/or file transfers. What's really impressive is the fact that USB 3.0 demonstrated speeds that were about equal to SATA II, even beating it by a few seconds! Of course, your results may vary but this gives a general idea of what to expect from this product when used with a typical home PC.
