CONCLUSIONS AND AFTERTHOUGHTS
I have to say this is one of the best enclosures I've had the opportunity to review and what won me over is Icy Dock's simple yet effective design. It actually took me longer to un-box everything than it did to install the hard drive, power it up, and begin copying files. All necessary cables are included and there are no tools or software required, making this a true plug-and-play product.
Mobile users will be happy with the design – the size is small enough to be highly portable and the construction is solid enough to survive being transported from location to location. Noise is a non-issue since there are no fans built in to the enclosure. While a silent product is a great thing, passive cooling for a hard drive had me concerned about the possibility of overheating. Fortunately, after leaving the enclosure powered on for a few days and copying several large files back and forth, I have not noticed any signs of data or drive corruption. The sides of the unit do get warm to the touch but that is to be expected with a 500 GB drive installed.
The only room for improvement that I can see would be the addition of an eSATA port on this unit. eSATA provides faster data transfers than both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 and while it's not as common as USB or FireWire right now, in the coming years that should change.
- Lightweight but durable aluminum construction
- Simple, tool-free installation
- Silent operation
- USB and FireWire cables included
- No eSATA connectivity
