PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES

With a conservative 400-watt rating and two +12V rails of 14 and 13 amps respectively, the Zen 400 is a more than capable power supply for most applications, but don't expect to run a couple of high end graphics cards with it. It does have a PCI-E 6-pin connector, and should support most cards that will accept the native connector. The Zen also has active PFC and an 80Plus Bronze certification.

Let's take a moment to discuss the 80 PLUS certification. To quote from the website (see it HERE ,) 80 Plus is an innovative, electric utility-funded incentive program to integrate more energy-efficient power supplies into desktop computers and servers. Participating utilities and energy efficiency organizations across North America have contributed over $5 million of incentives to help the computer industry transition to 80 PLUS certified power supplies.

As you can see from the above table, to achieve the 80Plus certification, the PSU must demonstrate 80% or better efficiency at 20%, 50% and 80% of the rated capacity. In 2008 Bronze, Silver and Gold categories were added and the corresponding efficiency benchmarks are listed above. 80Plus certified power supplies, when compared to less efficient PSUs, will generally be quieter while producing less heat, have higher quality components and save you a little money on your electric bill. However, the money saved is unlikely to offset the higher cost of an 80Plus unit, as the savings calculator on the 80Plus website shows. Nevertheless, for me, the lower temps, quieter operation and quality components found in 80Plus power supplies make up for the extra cost, in most cases. This Zen 400 offering is rated 80Plus Bronze.
