SMALL HEATPIPE TECHNOLOGY TUTORIAL
I am going to keep this as simple as possible to get the basic premise across to all of the Tweaknews readers. Please don't be insulted if this is too simple for your education level. I have to cater my writing to the least technical reader looking for information.
The basic idea behind heatpipe technology is really simple.
1.) With a tube containing a compressed fluid/gas, the fluid comes in contact with the heat source (the CPU core, in this case) which heats up the volatile fluid and turns it to a gas. The energy is absorbed in the gas production process and is ready for transportation.
2.) The heated gas now travels along the inner portion of the tube where it comes to the cooling portion of the heatsink in this example.
3.) The radiator, with or without a fan, will cool the liquid and transfer the energy (AKA heat) to the radiator to be dispersed to the surrounding air. With the heat removed, the vapor quickly condenses back to a fluid and runs along the inside surface of the pipe, back down to the bottom, where the process can be started all over again.
For another example, you can consider a boiling pot of water with a glass lid as a very very basic heatpipe. When the water boils, the water vapor comes in contact with the cooler glass pot lid which forces the vapor to condense back to water, where it dribbles back down the inside of the lid back into the pot.
It's basic, but it gets the point across.
PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES
The Gamerstorm could be somewhat of a large cooler depending on what case you have. It stands at 134X98X158mm weighing quite a bit at 1189g. It is designed to work with the latest Intel and AMD platforms as well as the older Intel LGA775 socket and AM2 socket platforms.
The heatsink comes shipped with a stylish blue 120mm PWM fan rated at 12VDC. It features a rubber frame instead of the usual plastic and works with a hydro bearing, boasting a maximum airflow of 66.3CFM with a fan speed of 500+200~1500+10% RPM operating between a 17.6~27.6dB(A) range.
This cooler comes packaged in a simple yet elegant, white box displaying the many features of the Gamerstorm. All along the bottom are pictures representing features such as the 6 heatpipes, mirror polished materials, a copper base, high performance and so on. At the very right are the “badges” of the compatible platforms which include the newest Core i7/i5/3 platforms, AM3/2+/2, and the older LGA775 platform.
With the cooler, comes a selection of hardware to use for installing it on your preferred platform. In one plastic bag you get the retention plate for the Intel platforms and in the other bag there is the retention plate for the AMD platform. In a separate bag you get hardware such as two different types of washers, one for each platform, river and hex nuts, thumb screws for the AMD setup and even a tube of thermal grease. You also get two sets of wire clips for installing the fan, a low-noise adapter (7V), a 4-pin PSU adapter and a 4-pin Y-shape adapter. Last but not least is a very informative and helpful installation guide.
