Cooler Master's idea of the Boom Boom speaker is great – a compact, portable speaker that can be used while on the road with a laptop, MP3 player, or phone will appeal to many consumers. The end result from Choiix is a product that does have some strong points but still leaves a bit to be desired.
I'm left very impressed by the design of the unit. The small size makes it perfect for traveling and I like how the speaker cover doubles as a stand. My favorite feature though is how the audio cable can be tucked away in a groove built right in to the speaker. Ease of use is a major factor when buying portable electronics and the Boom Boom speaker is simple enough to quickly set up at any time. Be prepared for lots of fingerprints on the outside of the unit due to the glossy black finish, though.
Unfortunately, sound quality is the area where the speaker is lacking. I wasn't expecting the best sound I've ever heard, but I did expect music and videos to sound a little richer than they did. There was some improvement over the sound that comes from built-in laptop speakers, but it was minimal. The sound remained too heavy on the treble and too lacking in bass.
Despite this, the speaker is only $20 and those who travel a lot will get plenty of use out of it. I can definitely see myself pairing it with an MP3 player or phone at work or in other environments where headphone use is not appropriate. Buy it for convenience rather than sound quality, and you'll be happy.
