ASUS EAH5830 HD 5830 DIRECTCU VIDEOCARD INTRODUCTION

It was only a few short years ago that the black art of overclocking and tweaking your videocard to perform above spec was frowned upon by most hardware manufacturers. But in today's market, adding in overclocking functionality is now a key marketing term to draw in new enthusiasts and gamers looking to get a little more bang for their hard-earned dollar.

What was once something that would void your warranty and have a RMA department turn their back on you is now popular past time in the hardware community for over 10 years is finally accepted. It's not so much that they allow it, but they push you to do it and and do everything short of opening and holding the door open for you while still allowing you to keep your full warranty. As I have said before, competition is a great thing and the industry has finally seeing that if you can't beat them, join them.

Today on the review block is a prime example of the point I am getting across. The Asus EAH5830 DirectCU edition is not your everyday overclocked videocard. Sure some other manufacturers allow you to overclock and that is perfectly normal today. But Asus is pushing the envelope a little further by not only allowing you to ramp up your clock rates, but also push them farther by unlocking the GPU core voltage control. Through their included SmartDoctor software, you are now allowed to push voltage rates past the stock voltage levels and push you core to the absolute maximum while supplying the extra voltage needed to keep things stable. Sure with the added voltage their will be additional heat output but they also try and have you covered by strapping on a rather robust heatpipe cooling solution.

But will this card perform better when voltage tweaked and overclocked to its limit or will it fall flat on its face and be summed up as a marketing ploy? Read on to find out..
