PROCESSOR TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS
As mentioned previously, Intel's prescott line of processors have been known to be rather warm. I found that the new 6XX based processors did indeed run a bit cooler at full load and did run quite a bit cooler at idle when compared to the full speed idle processor speeds applied with the older LGA775 Prescotts and Extreme Edition processors.

Temperature testing was undertaken using the onboard thermal diode using the stock Intel heatsink and fan combination with fan speeds set at maximum. Idle temperatures were measured after one hour and load temperatures were taken after two hours of stress testing using Prime95's maximum heat torture test.
As you can see, the difference between the processor with the speedstep technology and the full clock Extreme Edition are very different yet the load temperatures vary very little.

Benchmarking Explained:
I will be testing these two 64bit capable processors both in a 64bit operating system environment and also in a standard 32bit environment. Some benchmarks would not run in a 64bit environment running in 32bit legacy mode and I will tell you which ones would not work as I progress through the benchmarks.
Benchmarking programs and results will mostly be in legacy 32bit mode other than the new SiSoft Sandra 2005 64bit Edition which is currently available in a full 64bit compatible version.
