INTEL I7-980X GULFTOWN SIX CORE PROCESSOR REVIEW

(03-10-2010)

The Intel I7-980x being reviewed today is one of those products coming onto the market that you know know is more of a 32nm victory lap rather than a product that is trying to leap-frog the competition. With nothing in sight that could even touch the Nehalem in terms of performance, the Gulftown adds to an impressive performance market lead that will not be superceded by anyone but themselves for some time to come.

MSI 890GXM-G65 AMD Motherboard Review @ OCIA.net

Posted by Nathan @ 4:00 PM (EDT)

Although AMD's latest chipset the 890GX, codename RS880D, is very similar to last year's 785G - RS880, the most striking improvement is the addition of a new southbridge, the SB850. Supporting USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0, the SB850 opens up much needed additional bandwidth for faster external accessories and solid state drives. While many 890GX boards utilize a full size ATX format, MSI's initial offering is the 890GXM-G65, a microATX style. The 890GX offers integrated graphics, using the RV620 graphics core, which supports DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1 and a host of video decoding and acceleration formats. CrossFire is supported but the 16 available lanes must be split into a dual 8X configuration. Hybrid CrossFire is also available, allowing use of a HD5450 discrete video card to be paired with the onboard for up to a 25% improvement in gaming performance.

Radeons HD 5770: A Hawk Versus Arctic Ice @ InsideHW

Posted by Nathan @ 3:59 PM (EDT)

The Radeon HD 5770 is currently praised as a very good choice in the upper middle class of GPUs, since it provides very good performance in resolutions typical for 20” and 22” monitors at a decent price, which is likely to become the optimal choice for gamers today. We rejoiced to see so many manufacturers coming out with their own models so fast, shunning the referent ATI design in order to create a bit pricier, but faster graphics card to start with, a gain which can be increased even further by overclocking, courtesy of high-quality cooling systems implemented by various manufacturers. We’ve received two very interesting models whose overclock range took us by surprise, both cards sporting great looks and an attractive accompanying bundle…

Fractal Design Define R2 Silent Chassis PC Case Review @ OverclockersHQ

Posted by Nathan @ 3:58 PM (EDT)

If you are in the market for a new PC for a workspace chances are that bright LEDs and loud high RPM fans are not exactly what you are looking for. A lot of people would love to run their PC’s 100% passive but cannot afford to lose the cooling ability of fans. This is where Fractal Design Comes in with the new Define R2 Series Silent Chassis line. These cases are designed to be fully modular. If you need more airflow you will sacrifice a little sound dampening and in like manner if you need more silence you will lose some airflow. This is the first case I have ever seen that covers the front with sound dampening material so you can block out the sound from the ODD drives, this is a great case that has received some great reviews so let’s get into it and see it in action:

ASUS P7P55D-E Pro Intel P55 LGA 1156 Motherboard Review @ ThinkComputers.org

Posted by Nathan @ 5:17 AM (EDT)

There are a couple of other decisions that will have to be made, mainly whether or not to get ready for the two other new technologies on the market…SATA 6gb/s, and USB 3. Many new P55 motherboards have onboard SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3, but were you aware that most of them actually use PCI-E lanes to compensate for the lack of buses to utilize these new methods of data transfer, taking those valuable lanes away from the video cards? Today I will be looking at the Asus P7P55D-E Pro, a middle-of-the-road version of Asus’ new P55 motherboards that sport SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3 without PCI-E compens ation. Yes, this board prepares you for the future while allowing you the full use of your PCI-E lanes for SLI or CrossfireX by using Asus’ new PLX implementation. Is the P7P55D-E Pro the P55 board to have? Coolink Corator DS Gapless Direct Touch CPU Cooler Review @ Legit Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 5:15 AM (EDT)

Back in January Coolink released its newest CPU cooler called the Corator DS, and they sent us one to test. Coolink is known for inexpensive coolers that perform, and in times like now inexpensive is good. This time around Coolink is bringing new technology to the market with their cooler: Gapless Direct Touch. Just like the name suggests, the base of the Corator DS is Heatpipe Direct Touch (HDT) design instead of the normal gaps between the round pipes. Also, the base of the HDT design is copper fitted, so that fills the space between the heatpipes. It allows the base to perform as an HDT cooler and also has the benefits of a solid base with no gaps. What also makes this interesting is that Coolink is using the Noctua SecuFirm2 mounting system...

Xclio A380 Color Plus Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 5:14 AM (EDT)

It seems Xclio put a slightly higher importance on looks than function, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing because I still think it looks awesome. On the other hand, these problems did show in the testing. I don't really have too much to say about the wire management, as some features are there such as mostly everything already being pre-wired, but it doesn't seem like much extra thought was put into making other wiring look clean. For a case as expensive as this, I really would have expected better temperatures, some paint on the inside, some accommodations for wire management, and the simple, but massively convenient, heatsink mounting bracket access hole.

HIS Radeon HD 5770 1GB Video Card @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 7:24 PM (EDT)

The card to arrive was a HD 5770; it wasn't a Turbo nor an IceQ version and since I had already reviewed two HD 5770s from HIS, I figured I was probably going to be dealing with a card that I'd already seen. When I opened it up, though, I found a new fan design that looked pretty cool.

Since the release of the HD 5700 series we've seen companies release models with different types of fans. ATI themselves had two different versions of the card; one with the cooler that's like the HD 5800 series cards and a cheaper designed one. It seems that HIS have added another card to the flock so let's take the time to see how it goes.

ProlimaTech Armageddon CPU Cooler Review @ Benchmark Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 7:24 PM (EDT)

The aftermarket heatsink industry is very competitive, and manufacturers often release several product designs before finally scoring a win with enthusiasts and overclockers. The Megahalems was ProlimaTech's first run at CPU-cooler's, and a very sucessful one at that. Earning our Editor's Choice Award and countless accolades from other websites, ProlimaTech has built high expectations with their follow-up products. The ProlimaTech Armageddon is one such cooling solution with a legacy to fill, and with six heatpipes and enough finsink area for two 140mm fans it seems a reasonable possability. Benchmark Reviews recently tested the ProlimaTech Armageddon heatsink in our Best CPU Cooler Performance series, on an overclocked Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor against several other top CPU coolers.

Antec CP-850 850W Power Supply Review @ ThinkComputers.org

Posted by Nathan @ 7:23 PM (EDT)

Antec has always been known for making very reliable power supplies. They have done something a little interesting with their CP-Series power supplies though. They are designed differently so they are larger than most power supplies, which means they will only fit in certain cases. Those cases include Antec’s Twelve Hundred, P183, and P193. The larger size does allow for a better internal design, but is that worth limiting what cases you can put the power supply in? Antec has sent us their 850W version of the CP-Series, let’s put it to the test and see if it’s worth it!

Asus M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 Motherboard Review @ OverclockersHQ

Posted by Nathan @ 7:22 PM (EDT)

Asus has been making quality components for a number of years. For some it has been the go to company for components because they are rock solid and always quality. A somewhat new technology Asus is focusing on is their Xtreme Phase technology. Unlike their competitors they decided to go with unique phase angles as opposed to they use double phase angles which are not as efficient. So what does this mean to you? Most problems with poorly design motherboards is the power efficiency and distribution. Poor quality power or the wrong voltages can send your motherboard into a tail spin, Asus knows this and that is why they included their Xtreme Phase technology on their latest motherboards, it is utilized by hardware switching; when the load is medium to heavy it activates all the phase banks, when your load is less it will scale down to 4 phase banks. Asus makes quality products because of their introduction of VRM technology and quality components to an already great board design. Today we will be looking at one of Asus’s Xtreme Design front runners: the Asus M4At85TD-V EVO Motherboard, coupled with the always welcome 785G Chipset for the AM3 platform.
