iXBT Labs Review: Intel DP55WB "Whitesburg" Motherboard
|
Posted by Nathan @ 12:17 PM (EDT) |
The only question Whitesburg may start is, "Why is it based on P55 and not H55?" Blame those who decided on the gradual rollout of the LGA1156 platform. As a result of which, P55 PCH was the only available chipset for the first six months. So, if Intel DP55WB remains one of the cheapest in the market, its life cycle will be long. If similar products based on H55 will be cheaper, then there will be no sense in buying this motherboard. |
NZXT Tempest Evo Crafted Series Case @ Pro-Clockers
|
Posted by Nathan @ 12:11 PM (EDT) |
NZXT is owed another thanks. Today they dropped on my doorstep the Tempest EVO. This is a solid black mid tower that gives you a lot of room to grow. I recently reviewed their Hades case and I make a few comparisons between the two. Both cases are from their Crafted Series and are priced similarly, within $10 or so of each other. I’m always excited to see new gear show up, especially cases. I recently picked up a Zalman 10X Extreme cooler and I’ve had a tough time finding a case that will fit it, allowing me to close the side panel. This one looks promising with the smaller lower set side panel fan.

HIS Radeon HD 5870 iCooler V Turbo Video Card Review @ Tweaktown
|
Posted by Nathan @ 12:07 PM (EDT) |
I love pre-overclocked cards. It's always great to get a bit more speed out of a model and not have to pay a whole lot more for it. Thanks to companies like HIS offering overclocked cards, the few companies who used to offer them can't charge the same premium that they used to and if they do, people aren't willing to pay it as often.
What we'll do before we have a look at the clocks that HIS have opted for is check out the package and have a closer look at the card and the cooler they've decided to use.

Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB SATA 6G HD Review @ HotHardware.com
|
Posted by Nathan @ 1:33 PM (EDT) |
Although Solid State Drives are all the rage lately, they comprise only a fraction of the overall desktop PC storage market. While SSDs are undeniably fast and enhance the overall user experience, they are also prohibitively expensive for many users and offer relatively low capacities. As such, traditional, spinning hard drives, with their huge capacities and low cost per gigabyte, still make up the lion's share of the market.
One of the more interesting hard drives to hit the scene recently is the Seagate Barracuda XT. Its 2TB capacity, 64MB of cache, and 7200 RPM spindle speed will automatically piqué the interest of many enthusiasts. But couple those features with the drive's support for SATA 6G and the story gets all the more interesting...

Gigabyte HD 5780 (GV-R587UD-1GD) @ Bjorn3D
|
Posted by Nathan @ 1:30 PM (EDT) |
The days of buying a stock reference video card and not having other options is long past and Gigabyte is capitalizing on the aftermarket bonanza. Their Ultra Durable line of GPU's feature a 2oz copper PCB to decrease electrical resistance and decrease operating temperatures. Solid Capacitors to extend the life of the GPU and Tier 1 Samsung or Hynix memory for better overclocking. Combine all that with a great aftermarket fan factory installed and you have a lean mean overclocking machine.
Enter the Gigabyte HD 5870 Ultra Durable (GV-R587UD-GD) ATI Radeon video card and you get all that in a massive graphic powerhouse and it features a nice dual fan inclined cooling solution that is pretty unique. While we love the look of the ATI 5800 series GPU's and their black and red cowling heat is always a concern when purchasing an expensive GPU and the Inclined cooling fans on the Gigabyte HD 5870 might be just what the doctor ordered. |
CoolIT Systems ECO A.L.C. CPU Cooler Review @ Tweaktown
|
Posted by Nathan @ 1:30 PM (EDT) |
The people at CoolIT took notice and went back to the drawing board to produce not only a more widely compatible cooling solution, but to try to make this product as affordable as possible. Things like mounting of both the heat exchanger and how to mount the radiator all came into play. Alongside the compatibility there was also efficiency and noise levels that were major factors that needed to be solved before the release of their new product. Just to show where the company stands on the quality of their product, they sent samples around for the media to test. Reports came in about a possible mounting issue and CoolIT recalled them all, redesigned the mounting and resent the retail ready versions for another round of our labs abuse. |
Samsung LN46B550 46inch LCD TV Review @ CCE Reviews
|
Posted by Nathan @ 1:25 PM (EDT) |
In a few weeks we'll be seeing Samsung's 2010 lineup hit the retail market. That means now is the perfect time to take advantage of sales and clearance markdowns. The 46B550 is maybe a little older and does not have all the bells and whistles associated with the Series 6 or 7 models but it's still a great buy for the right person. You will still have a full 1080p picture with exceptional quality and features that require little tweaking outside the box. If you primarily watch cable broadcasts or only enjoy the occasional video game or action packed movie, then the 46B550 could be perfect for you.

MSI 890GXM-G65 AMD Motherboard Review @ OCIA.net
|
Posted by Nathan @ 4:00 PM (EDT) |

Although AMD's latest chipset the 890GX, codename RS880D, is very similar to last year's 785G - RS880, the most striking improvement is the addition of a new southbridge, the SB850. Supporting USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0, the SB850 opens up much needed additional bandwidth for faster external accessories and solid state drives. While many 890GX boards utilize a full size ATX format, MSI's initial offering is the 890GXM-G65, a microATX style. The 890GX offers integrated graphics, using the RV620 graphics core, which supports DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1 and a host of video decoding and acceleration formats. CrossFire is supported but the 16 available lanes must be split into a dual 8X configuration. Hybrid CrossFire is also available, allowing use of a HD5450 discrete video card to be paired with the onboard for up to a 25% improvement in gaming performance. |
Radeons HD 5770: A Hawk Versus Arctic Ice @ InsideHW
|
Posted by Nathan @ 3:59 PM (EDT) |
The Radeon HD 5770 is currently praised as a very good choice in the upper middle class of GPUs, since it provides very good performance in resolutions typical for 20” and 22” monitors at a decent price, which is likely to become the optimal choice for gamers today. We rejoiced to see so many manufacturers coming out with their own models so fast, shunning the referent ATI design in order to create a bit pricier, but faster graphics card to start with, a gain which can be increased even further by overclocking, courtesy of high-quality cooling systems implemented by various manufacturers. We’ve received two very interesting models whose overclock range took us by surprise, both cards sporting great looks and an attractive accompanying bundle…

Fractal Design Define R2 Silent Chassis PC Case Review @ OverclockersHQ
|
Posted by Nathan @ 3:58 PM (EDT) |
If you are in the market for a new PC for a workspace chances are that bright LEDs and loud high RPM fans are not exactly what you are looking for. A lot of people would love to run their PC’s 100% passive but cannot afford to lose the cooling ability of fans. This is where Fractal Design Comes in with the new Define R2 Series Silent Chassis line. These cases are designed to be fully modular. If you need more airflow you will sacrifice a little sound dampening and in like manner if you need more silence you will lose some airflow. This is the first case I have ever seen that covers the front with sound dampening material so you can block out the sound from the ODD drives, this is a great case that has received some great reviews so let’s get into it and see it in action: |
MSI Radeon HD 5870 Lightning Video Card review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 3:53 PM (EDT) |
The Lightning series has already left a mark with us recently and it looked like it could be a dominant force in the enthusiast market. Combining both an impressive model with stand out features, MSI are able to do something special.
The latest model to get hit by the lightning bolt is the HD 5870 which is already a model we know and love. But the question is, what have MSI done to the model to make it stand out from the pack? Turns out, quite a lot!

G.SKILL PIS Series 4GB Kit 2000MHz (F3-16000CL6D-4GBPIS) @ Bjorn3D
|
Posted by Nathan @ 3:52 PM (EDT) |
G.SKILL has been making affordable memory DIMM's since 1989 and if you've built a computer within the past 2-3 years, you more than likely know exactly who G.SKILL is. It's hard to look passed G.SKILL's value line of memory especially if you're on a budget, but what about the hardcore enthusiast? With their PI Series line of memory, G.SKILL has been known to offer high frequency compatible memory at decent pricing. This DDR3, 2000MHz, 4GB dual channel kit we received from G.SKILL is no exception. With 6-9-6-24 2N timings and 2000MHz of frequency to play with, we were very eager to see what this PI Series kit was capable of. |
