| I know a lot of folks have received the 0x800A138F error code from Windows 2000 SP3 for Windows Update, but I'm also getting it on XP Pro. Any idea how I can get the site to work again? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks. |

Windows Update Error 0x800A138F After Installing SP3 (14-09-2002)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you receive the subject error while visiting Windows Update:
1. Start / Run / regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u / OK to un-register the library
2. Use Start / Search to search for Files and Folders. Type iuengine.dll, iuctl.dll into the file search box
3. Delete all occurrences of these two files
4. Re-visit Windows Update |

In our case, we were getting it because of a proxy server. In looking at our firewall while trying to connect, we saw that the update was pointing to unknown.level3.net, so we added the domain to our proxy server. Didn't work. It was a fake RDNS (why would they want to put one out there for denial of service attacks?). Ultimately, I did a tracert and found that the domain windows update was actually pointing to was akamai.net
After adding that, it works like a champ! |

also guys, if you seem to be locked out of Windows Update and it seems to quickly bow out of the scan and say there is nothing available when you know there is, make sure you set the time in your BIOS and windows correctly.
If windows update sees that your computer time is out of whack, it won't allow you in to update.
Just a hint from my experience. _________________ Owner & Administrator

true, that fix was found in a win2k support area...which is why I asked about whether it was an "update" install rather than a "fresh" install.
An update might have had a similar approach to the issue.
Good to see everything is corrected now!
enjoy. |

If you are still having the 0x800A138F Windows Update problem I've posted a fix on my site. Works for Windows XP and 2000. No fancy DLL updating or tricky URL's to use.
http://www.dylangreene.com/blog.asp?blogID=237
Worked for me and my brother, but that doesn't mean it will work for everybody. |

I Have discovered a fix, for all those ppl who have tried all the others.
Firstly you have to sign in as the administrator, if the administrator user is disabled, enable it by:
go to start, ctrl panel, admin. tools, computer managment, users and groups, users, and right-click on Administrator. Go to properties then uncheck the box saying disable this account.
Now restart and sign in as the aministrator.
Go to windows update and it will work. |

This worked for me.....
Open Internet Explorer
Click on Tools
Click on Internet Options
Click on the General tab and click the "Languages" button.
Add a language to the list if empty.
Now click OK and then OK and close Internet Explorer
Or.....
In some reported cases you have to add a second language, English-United States, and move it to the top of the list!
Side Note:
(NB - For those of you wondering why this may happen. Well the file that contains your Update History is called iuhist.xml, and there is a known bug where the Send method of XMLHttp on XML 2.6, or later, fails with error code 0x800A138F if there are no languages specified in Internet Explorer.)

| After unregistering the dll's you will need to reboot to delete the last instance of iuctl.dll from system32. Once that is done it reregisters and works like a charm. Thanks for the info DMW. |

That did it for me too! On WinXP.
I think the 0x800A138F error is a very generic error, and there are any number of real causes. You have to look inside C:\Windows\Windows Update.log to find the real error code, and search for that. In my case it was throwing 0x800C0008 when trying to get the software update catalog from Akamai.
However, I have no clue why this problem suddenly appeared a few weeks ago. I certainly didn't clear out my browser languages list manually. |
