Im not a super wizard in virus and programing, but i also had problems right after i updated my mcAfee dat 4229.dat.
I believe its either a scam from mccafee to push people to update their software, or buy the latest version, it could to figure out who really bought their version of mcafee and who didnt because and have cracked version. So people with non legal version will be stuck with the insane.dam .
Could it be a power scam combined between major anti-virus companies??
postly no one check what type of content the Anti-virus software whatever the brand, updates to the user pc.
Maybe its my succeptible nature or my paranoia side that raised those question to myself. But you know they are watching us, who are watching them? :-)
So what im learning from this is that instead of formating my box, which i was almost ready to do, but im happy i checked the web for insane.dam info.
Let me know about you McAfee update and if the prob was solve.

theres a fix for this, but if you was such a virus programmer you would go ahead deleted files which have sumhow just got infected!!!! I mean the first file infected has to be a new file an existing file cannot just become infected!!! Anyways it wasn't a hoax mcafee made so people would update there virus scan nope it was an error because ppl don't update properly! http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/naicommon/download/dats/find.asp _________________ pentiums suck |

Ok, I'm new here and I am totally screwed. I am on my other system due to this "hoax" or "virus". This virus is basically reading this:
| Quote: |
Scan Engine v4.0.35 for DOS.
Virus data file v4229 created 10/16/2002
Scanning for 1749152182 viruses, trojans and variants.
Checking Memory for viruses ... is OK.
Scanning C: [Ken]
Scanning C:\*.*

C:\VIZPNPIN.EXE

C:\FIXQAZ.EXE
Found the W32/Insanedam virus ! ! ! |
That's what it reads AFTER I press ESC to get off of the Windows loading screen. I left the Windows loading screen to do its thing for a good 5-10 minutes and then pressed ESC and read that.
That PC is running on a 450 P3 on Windows 98. How can I fix this? Help me please! |

Sigh I don't know which one is for Win9x or Win98. Plus, all are ZIPs and you cannot open ZIPs in DOS(?).
Plus, it won't let me boot into Windows. How would I install it? Through the C: command prompt in DOS? How would I get to the C: command prompt? |

I didn't delete ANY of the files. I left my sytem on last night while it was updating and downloading the recent DAT files. It said it needed to reboot so I let it reboot and then I went to bed. I turn off my monitor when I go to bed in order to increase my resolution when it is done rebooting so when I accessed my PC, I rebooted my machine because I thought that it might've turned off. Well, when it booted, it stayed on that screen that I copied earlier. Other than that, I've done nothing. I've ALT+CTRL+DEL like 10 times by now to reboot and MAYBE access something by getting to the C: prompt but I can't figure it out!
Any solutions, at all? =(
Also, I don't have my Win9x disc, I do have the upgrade to WinXP Pro but I only have a 12.6 GB HD on that System and I cannot afford for XP to take out 1-2 GB of that space, if not more. =( |

ah ....that smells like a warez-request ...
In this forum i would like to stear clear of those matters ...
with legal issues and stuff ...
the engine update however is to be found on the mcafee website ... find the links in the rest of the topic. |
No warez request i mean the demo/trail version
and where can I find a (dutch) engine? |

| I have McAfee Virus Scan 6 Professional with Firewall 3.0. I am totally updated in every respect but still get W32/insane.dam. It is located in the Freedom Force CD on "fforce.exe" and on the freedom force game folder. I need help because I'm not using and old version. I sent an e-mail to Crave Entertainment and McAfee on the 20/10/02 but don't have a reply yet. |

| All i have to say to that is that just shows you how evil software companies are lol.. Really thats just messed up and i cant believe it. I am also surprised they havnt benn sued over this issue. Just because i remmeber being one of the dumb idiots getting hit with the i love u virus(im not gonna say who in my family dl...ok i was the dumb one lmao) and having to delete almost everything and losing a ton of important stuff that can never be reclaimed. And if i had went through something like that for a hoax from the company i would be hearing lawsuit bells...<Ignore me im just a foolish person that talks to much.> |

| Heres the rub folks, as per that last post Mcafee is indeed renaming the files, not deleting them. So if you update the engine to the latest version then rename every file that supposadly has the virus by removing the vir and you should be good |

|
|
This came straight from McAfee's Prime support:
With the release of the 4229 dat files this week, AVERT has
received feedback on a false alarm on the W32/Insane.dam
virus. This false alarm is only being seen with out of date,
unsupported engine versions. AVERT has decided that since
this is only occurring with unsupported engines, we will not
be releasing a new dat set this week to correct the false
alarm, thereby sparing customers who are up-to-date from
having to push another set of DATs. Customers are urged to
upgrade their engine, and get detection for all the viruses
they are missing today.
The corrected detection has been added to the daily dats and
will be added to the 4230 dat files to be released next week.
This correction will suppress detection of this virus for
engines older than version 4.1.50, as the technology required
for detection of this virus is not present in these out of
date, unsupported engines.
For those customers who are seeing the false alarm in their
test environment, we are recommending that they not deploy
this weeks dat files and wait until next week to deploy.
Though there are many new viruses detected in the 4229 dat
files, none of them are critical detections for customer
running the unsupported engines as those viruses we would
consider critical require technology not found within the
unsupported engines for detection.
For information on our current supported engines please refer to

OK - I'm just about to dump this McAf***ing cr*p. as well - maybe I can also help before I thow the disks out the window and install Norton which I have on my other machines and works very well.
I have been using Virus scan for the last 3 months - yesterday it started saying the licence was expired - ha ha - another attempt to get you to spend money
After swaring at their help desk they finally suggested reinstalling the software - which I have done & now I get this insanedam virus thingie
Fix.... (I think) - - -
As Windows is booting hold the F1 key down.
As it drops into DOS and starts its virus scan hit Control C (or Control D or somehting) - this kills the scan
Edit autoexec.bat and remove the (rem out) the scan commands
type win & windows starts
I'm just running a scan now & have not finished this upgrade process yet... but this appears to have gotten around the issue of windows not booting at the moment
(Windows 98 - Virsu scan professional 6)

I'm not sure if it's just a hoax because something weird happened to me! I have McAfee VirusScan 6 and I've updated everytime Instant Updater sent a message. So, I had 4160 scan engine. I had also in computer Kazaa and it worked just fine on my new scan engine. I tried to find another p2p software and I found Limewire. I unistalled Limewire after I tried it and when I tried to open Kazaa the little annoying window from McAfee poped up saying that I had this virus. So, I chatted online with 2 guys from McAfee and they sent me some information to scan in MSDOS mode. I did it but that little evil was still there after that. I tried to find some information on the internet..NOTHING about w32/insane.dam. Just the following day I found some stuff about it. Now, when I disable the virusscan Kazaa is working properly but if I try to open it having the virusscan enable the window pops up instantly. What's going on actually? I really don't understand. |

I think I might know what to do, as I am dealing with the same problem now. Try this:
First, if your virus scan renamed any files rename them back. For example, mine renamed quite a few EXE files to VXE and even some DLL to VLL.
When you rename them - to start your computer in windows: When you push RESET to restart and the computer attempts to reboot keep pressing CTRL key, it should eventually switch to the screen that would let you start in SAFE mode. Do not start in safe mode, because you will not be able to do much. Instead choose the step-by-step option. The system will ask your consent before it performs any step of the booting, including running the bootscan. If you say "Y" to everything with the exception of bootscan (say "N" to that - you may have to do it twice), it will start in Windows. At least it did for me. And since you know you do not really have a virus on your system skipping bootscan should be safe. If you want to be extra careful, you can boot from a startup disk before all this and then in DOS run the bootscan on the master boot something. On my computer, after switching from A to C, I had to type the following: PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUSS~1\40~1.XX\bootscan.exe c:/BOOT This should run the bootscan, and tell you there is no infected file there. Your path to bootscan may be different, you can find it out by DOS prompt Type autoexec.exe - that shows you the text in it. Now you ran the bootscan and can sleep well. :)
So after you start in Windows (skipping the bootscan), you should be able to get on the Internet, download the update and fix the problem. I have to yet find that part out tonight though.
Hope this helps a little. |

The only side in the WWW where people talk about the insaned. But didn't help me much. I finally deleted McAffee and going to sell my modem. Tried to call McAfee, which didn't work, because their system was completely knocked down by a virus *roflmao* as the friendly german-speaking dutch voice explained. "Please hold..." After that I tried the chat: Stephanie Pelz. (I am not an antifeminist, but...) Again no help.
I am going to reinstall McAfee may be on Sunday and if you hear a big bang near Munich... .
Actually I'd like to ask you puter freaks if you could - like - explain in proper English for a computer expert like me if the in...exe is still there after I deleted Mca. or not. And how do I know what files McAffee has changed? (I only know that there are doc, pdf, exe, dat...and millions more).
Thanks a million and have a nice Weekend. |

I don't know what to do!!! I am pretty useless with computers and can't even figure out if I need another update or if this is a genuine virus (i have deleted the file and downloaded it again a couple of times, every time I do the msg comes up the same) |

| I had the W32/insane.dam virus but now I don't. No files were renamed for me as far as I know, and anyway, the latest dat files (4230) are released now. I haven't had any reoccureneces since. There was one advantage of this virus. It made me do a full system scan which detected another virus. |
