ok here i go- ive got 2 hard disks:
40gb p-ata partitioned to 3 sections (primary slave in bios)
used fdisk to partition a long time ago- c:\ is primary; d:\ and e:\ are logical and extended
new 120gb s-ata partitioned to 3 sections (third ide in bios)
used maxblast to partition into 3 sections - im not sure how the drives are strored ie. primary, logical, extended since max blast didnt ask?
i installed win xp on my new sata drive and here are the drive naming:
c - 1st 120gb partition
d - 1 st 40gb partition
e - 2 nd 120gb partition
f - 3 rd 120gb partition
g - 2 nd 40gb partition
h - 3 rd 40gb partition
i - dvd
j - cdrw
now thats way too many drives for me so im planning to format my 40gb into a single partition. so i wanted to just test to see if there were gonna be any problems with win xp frive naming so i plugged out my 40 gb hdd and ran win xp and lo and behold heres wht it came up with:
c - 1st 120gb partition
e - 2 nd 120gb partition
f - 3 rd 120gb partition
i - dvd
j - cdrw
why doesnt xp automatically move the drive letters:
this is wht im aiming for, can someone help me?
c - 1st 120gb partition
d - 2 nd 120gb partition
e - 3 rd 120gb partition
f - 40gb hdd
g - dvd
h - cdrw |

ok - ive sorta been doing some researching and found out that i can change the drive letter with the disk management tool in xp....but just before i change the drive letter it gives a warning that some progs might not work...advise pls...
shld i be doing this from somewhere else - another tool? and if i do and after i plug in my 40gb drive will it be c,d,e, (120gb) and f (40gb)?
shld i be warned of anything before i go try it out :) |

certain applications that were installed to a certain drive letter will make mention of that in the ini files... so if you change the drive letter, you could mess all of that up. if there aren't too many apps, then it's not hard to just reinstall so it gets the new drive letter.
i know that when changing the letters in partition magic as opposed to the management console in xp, it'll ask you if you want to reassign the letters in all apps. pretty useful. _________________ i'm the fool, he's the fanboy. together we are Fanboy and Fool... Tweaknews Reviewers |
