I have a problem with my Gigabyte 8800GT, whenever i try to play a game including GTA III my whole system freezes up the screen goes crazy and i have to restart the computer from the reset button on the front of the case.

I replaced the original thermal tape and paste combination with arctic cooling mx2 thermal paste and have a 120mm fan blowing cool air directly onto the card because from google research and personal knowledge with the card they have an overheating problem. Didn't solve the problem...

I then edited the bios file and flashed it with Nvflash setting the fan speeds to 100% to see if that would help...apart from it sounding like a leaf blower it gave no results.

My next step was to try and uninstall and reinstall the drivers and the problem reappeared again when trying to install the drivers...any of you guys have any experience with this card and it's problems??

Try using a different power lead to the card. It could be a power related issue. Also, download a good temp monitor that works with your card, there should be one on your driver CD but I usually use speedfan. Its possible that the cooler is not seated properly on the core but by the sound of it you have checked that already.

If none of this works then I think you may have a memory issue on the card itself. There should be no reason why the card would freeze the PC and artifact from heat when installing drivers. This sounds like a memory access problem, possibly a bad VRAM chip on the card. Though it may also be that the card is not getting enough power due to a faulty PSU lead or the PSU itself. This can also cause this type of problem seeing as the VRAM could be underpowered.

Voltages for the computer are as follows (from HW Monitor):

My current PSU is 550w Thermaltake TR2 and what's running from it is 4 x 120mm fans cpu fan 4 x HDD Geforce 8800GT iMon and CD Burner. Could it be because i need to bump up the power supply to 650w or more?
