*shrugs* I think that it will hit it's stride and we'll wonder how we did without it. I mean... if it pulls through on it's promises.

If it can't it's worth about as much as a stinking hippo carcass.

1 megabyte L2 cache!! SSE2 support, x86-64 support, integrated memory controller! This memory controller will operate at core cpu frequency, so if you have a 2ghz cpu, the memory controller will run at 2ghz as well, instead of the current 400 mhz.. I think it will take a while for this thing to become mainstream. I wouldn't buy one yet just because Longhorn isn't ready yet and although its backwards compatible (32bit) it's probably better to wait until there are 64bit applications to really make it worthwhile. I noticed Asus already has a motherboard for it on the Asus website. So all of you that just built new systems who are kicking themselves for not waiting for the athlon 64 release, I wouldn't sweat it. It's probably going to be a while before it's actually worth upgrading.

Wait wait wait wait wait......

What the hell does getting an Athlon 64 have to do with Longhorn? Longhorn is Microsoft's next operating system which is currently looking to be released in 2005 or later.

I don't know... preliminary benchmarks looks like people who just bought them some expensive Athlon boards are gunna be kicking themselves. *shrugs* But we'll see.

There will be a 64 bit version of XP coming out into the main market in January 2004.

I think its a great chip that will take the consumer market to new levels while Intel kicks themselves in the ass for not doing it sooner or atleast at the same time as AMD.

However, I plan to wait until sometime next year to get my A64 setup. Let all the bugs get worked out and such. Plus right now there is only the 3200+ version available and there isn't an Athlon64 specific chipset. They are being used on Opteron chipsets (like the nForce3...its made for opterons).

XP 64-bit is due out early 2004 like Nathan said, and UT2003 will have a 64-bit version soon (it was already working and demonstrated earlier this year). I wouldn't doubt that a UT2004 64-bit version would come out shortly after the regular version is released.

I'm contemplating buying my new P4 2.4 and waiting for the new intel as it'll only be a month or so after i purchase. Do you think it's worth the wait and the probable huuuuuge price leap? They'll have thought up a way to stop or at least cut down its OCing capabilities won't they? I'm very indecisive about this...

Recently both AMD and Intel seemed to have relaxed some of the OCing Nazism ( NO OVERCLOCKING FOR YOU!). At least that's my take.

Well, AMD has a new FAB process that stops you from unlocking their chips now.

Ony way to do it is through a Nforce2.

Seeing some benchies over at HardOCP has me convinced that this 64 bit thing is a phenomenal idea. Still expensive as all get out but still...

He raises a good point in his articile that AMD needs this to hit the ground running to make up some money. They arne't near insolvency as of yet but it could be close.... *shrugs*
