hey guys,
I need some help. I have an AMD XP 2500+ Barton CPU running ar 333FSB I made a custom cooling mod out of a coolermaster $10.00 heatsinch/fan combo. Used longer screws then I should have ti tighten down the heatplate that sits on the cpu. As far as I know they didnt hit the cpu. But I did forget to add some thermal compund between the heatplate and the heatsinch. It overheated-and shut down. I then proceeded to use the correct screws and add the thermal compund. I was using Artic Silver 3 the cpu temp ranmges anywhere from 118.4-131 put the heat rises from 118.1-131 very quickly. I changed and used a silicone compund and a thermal take volcano heatsinck and a 80MM fan thats 39 CFM and 3k RPM on the heatsink. It still runs at the same temp I do have the 4-pin and 20-pin connectors on the board. I am running a 400W Radimax powersply **(dont know if its true). I have a audigy soundcard dlink NIC, 40GB HD, DVDROM drive, IDE DOntrollercard(PCI), CDRW, And an ATN35 Shuttleboard (Nforce Chipset)**(blue)**. I dont know what the problem is, this all started when the mod was put on. Did I damage the CPU, or the PSU? Thank-You To antone who helps me out, or at least reads and attemps to.

"custom" work?
bad bad bad bad...
I suppose that one way to learn to find out what doesn't work....hehe
If I am reading you correctly....what ever gave you the idea that a heat plate would "help" matters?
not understanding the thermal properties of both the metals you are working with and the capacity of the original device will cost you.
so you basically sandwiched some sort of "plate" between the HSF and the CPU??? hehehe
next best thing to try is a garden hose to cool things down a bit...pay no attention to the smoke from the box...it's normal.
but seriosly....put the factory HSF back on and PROPERLY apply (you do know the proper way right?) some of the AS3 to make sure you didn't do any permenant damage.

Dude, remove the heatplate, I have no idea what you were thinkin of doing with this.
Just put the NORMAL heatsink and fan on and don't do anything like this again. Putting a heatplate on and then a heatsink fan combo is just not going to work.
Put the normal heatsink back on and croos your fingers that your CPU is not toast.
What ever made you think that this would work??!! _________________ Owner & Administrator

No dudes, the "Heat-Plate came stock with the coolermaster hsand fan combo you can see it at their website. http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=CP5-6J31C&other_title=+CP5-6J31C+
Thats what I'm runnin now. I took some strong Epoxy that can go up to 200F and mounted the stock fan frame to the side, and screwd the fan onto the fan frame as it was before. All I did was move the fan from the yop to the side. But the screws that I used to put the heat plate back on were a bit long as soon as I put it on and turned the computer on it overheated and shut down. But I also forgot to add some thermal greese between the heatplate and the heatsink. Could the screws messed up the cpu? I just bought a 550W antec power supply to try and help and yes this one is a True 550W I made sure of that. THe heatplate is the copper plate that you see on the bottom of the heatsink in that pic. I didnt add it, it was stock. THere was AS3 on everything after that, wich required some sort of thermal greese. I no longer have stock greese. I might buy that Zalman copper fin HSF combo later on. I just hope the CPU aint messed up. Any other suggestions would help. Thanks guys

It was an OEM chip. It has a 30-Day warrenty with newegg.com but frys has a 1yr manufactuer warrenty. I would assume 15-30day warrentee from the wholesaller or retailer and a 1yr manufacture warrentee. I also found that it overheated so much the thermal grease ripped one of the 4 sponge fevices that hold up the heatink right in half and also it got so hot the thermal greese turnded to liquid and ran into the pins on the bottom of the chip. It didnt go all the way through but a pro at this told me how to clean it but i got to figure out how to replace the sponge thing if this does not work I have to get AMD to replace it. I'm hella screwed right now! And I bought a 550W PSU TRUE FROM ANTEC and on AMD's website they are rated 2 out of like 50 reccomended 2themax is 1st. Any suggestions, or corrections would help me out alot, as you may know. .
100% pure alcohol to clean the core the organic part and pins
Contten q-tips to clean the core and organic part of the chip.
A thin almost Fiber-optic brush to clean pins w/100% alcohol
Sponge thing fix: Unknown right now.
Glass surface (for leaning) with 000 wet and dry sand paper to smooth the edges out on the copper to remove scrates to make sure heat gets to the heatsink.
Thanks
