okie dokie. no idea where to put this.... seems more like a software problem, but whatever.
the computer i'm on (yes, theres some highschool teaher getting paid to watch me get on [TN]. go public education system!) has a unique symptom:
the CD drive will not close. its open, and when i press the button, it closes, then opens, then closes, then opens and stays open untill i press it again.
i took a video, i'll load it to youtube later, maybe.
i don't really care, it's not my computer, so if theres no response to this thats ok. im just really intrigued as to what the heck could cause this. _________________ ÿ (0255) 愛

The drive is probably defective. There are a lot of mechanical bits in CD drives and if the drive is not closed properly it will open again. This usually happens to older drives when the motor that closes the tray gets clogged up with dust or the teeth on either the motor or tray are worn. If there is a grinding sound when the drive closes then its the gears, if you don't hear a solid click when the drive closes completely then its the motor. The mechanisim that spins the disk is raised into place by a slider with a dip at the end and if the motor does not have enough torque to pull it up the drive will just open again.
Try pushing the tray in manually, firmly but not too fast. It should stay closed and provided the lens still works should still read disks. Just be careful not to push it in too hard with a disk in it, it could jump out of the tray and damage both the drive and the disk.
Moral to story, get your school to replace the drive or use it to put your coffee cup on

day 2 in the computer lab and there has been a new development: when Chase Froelich (pronounced like "frolic in the flowers", weather he admits it or not) pushes the CD drive in, it makes a loud grinding noise before it opens back up.
and, unfortunately, I don't have coffee. i wish i had coffe, so i'd be less tired. But my teachers prefer the 2y that sleeps on the desk than the 2y that bounces off the ceiling.
