Sorry to bother you guys with this but I have some questions.
First, I love this forum.
2nd
see signature for my setup.
I downloaded the latest catalyst drivers from ati and installed them.
I also downloaded and installed DX9.0b.
my 9800 pro works perfectly when I am running my cpu at stock speed.
***My 9800 pro doesn't work perfectly when I overclock!***
I am new to overclocking and because of this I only increased the cpu external frequency by 5 and the dram frequency to 333mhz.. I didn't adjust anything else! I didn't adjust the AGP/PCI voltage or cpu voltage or ddr reference voltage. And since my system always hangs when I enable "TURBO" Mode, I left it on auto. So I boot winXPpro and everything seems fine. I run wcpuid to see the changes and Sisoft SanMax3. I have the thing clocked right around 2.5ghz. Ok it's a wussy oc but it's something until the thermalright sp-94 comes via ups ground delivery. Now I'm pretty excited about my first oc so I wanna see what happens when I play a few video games. Lets take chaser Multiplayer demo. I love this game. I never had problems before. So I load the game and find a server and start shooting! I'm shootin' here, I'm shootin there. (you get the idea) So after about 2 or 3 minutes of shootin'.........STRANGE JAGGED TRIANGLES AROUND MY GUN AND WALLS! ALL OVER THE PLACE, I CAN'T SEE WHO I'M SHOOTING!!!!!!!!..AWWWW...THIS BLOWS!!!!!

so I press the "start button" on my keyboard(the one with the windows logo) to get back to the desktop. And everything's fine. I figured Maybe it was the drivers and dx9 so I downloaded both. Loaded up the game and same thing happened. I went back into the bios and turned the grapics aperture from 64 to 128. I don' tknow what this means but I figured since I have 128mb ddr video card, I'd give it a try. You know what happened? Same thing! So finally i went back into the bios and put everything at default except hyper threading(you gotta leave that on).............i think? So I restart, boot the game, and everything work fine. I played for 15 minutes and I finally came to this conclusion...I think I'm not very good at this overclocking thing. But I just bought a new 120 mm. stealth fan(intake) and the sp-94 etc. I want to oc, I'm prepared to overclock! But I can't justify overclocking if I can't use my video card.

so any helpful feedback would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

Just for Info sake...what is the ambient temperature in the room with the PC?
The 9800Pro has run flawlessly for me, but I have ONLY increased FSB speed.

I would be curious to see what you get running the new aquamark benchie tool on your machine. It uses DX9.

Here is one place to get it...
http://download.guru3d.com/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=673

Here are some of my scores using the machine in my sig.
Running the standard test (with my video card set to "Highest Quality")
I got:
4215 GFX
6877 CPU
32276

Rebooted and ran it again just to check for consistencey...
4209
6890
32244

OK, this time I turned all GPU settings to optimal performance(no reboot):
5604
6884
39827

Now I added 6 MHz to FSB (181x11=1991MHz) and ran at stock multiplier, using higest quality video settings again...
4206 GFX
7124 CPU
32403

ALWAYS lock your AGP/PCI voltage.

ANd I'm pretty sure those artifacts mean that you're clock isn't stable.

if you can lock the AGP bus, you need to do so at the stock speed (66MHz)....do not use any "default" or "auto" settings.

it's a safe place to start

...and do not forget that the supported resolutions are:
720 x 400* @ 70 Hz
640 x 480 @ 60 Hz to 85 Hz
800 x 600* @ 56 Hz to 85 Hz
832 x 624* @ 75 Hz
1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz to 85 Hz
1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz to 76 Hz

You will have to bypas Auto and use a fixed AGP/PCI ratio of 66/33.

I downloaded aquamark 3 and ran the basic test.
5,454 gfx
7,717 cpu
40,302
i did it again
5,481
7,672
40,382
now I'm going to lock the agp/pci ratio. I'll be right back.

Yep, mine is locked at 66....

Are you using the FULL quality settings or FULL performance?
(did I mention that my processor cost only $85 USD?)

OK! No more problem with the video card! I have the PCI/AGPdivider at 66.66/33.33 . I just fiddled around with the cpu ext frequency from 213 - 223.
left everything else alone. now wcpuid says sys clock 223.08
multiplier 12
sys bus 892.30
cpu temp 41.5c/106.5F
internal clock approx. 2677.30
mb temp 34c/93/f
I am only using 1 case fan output. 120 mm.
and the stock cpuhsf
and powersupply fan

SOMEONE POSTED THESE STEPS TODAY, BUT I'M HAVING TROUBLE WITH A FEW THINGS.

I REMARKED AFTER EVERY STEP IN CAPS SO IT EASY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE.
General Overclocking Steps

This is a possible method to overclock a new CPU.

Step 0
Update your Bios to the newest.
OK!

Step 1
a) PCI locked Motherboard: lock agp/pci to "fixed", 66/33
OK(THIS FIXED THE GRAPHICS PROBLEM)THANKS!

b) not PCI locked: Use the PCI/AGP divider to regulate the PCI. The PCI bus should not exceed 38Mhz. If it does, you will either suffer from instability problems or you will run the risk of corrupting the data on your hard drive. Ex. If you have a motherboard with a 1/5 PCI/AGP divider you do not want to exceed 190 Mhz FSB since 190/5 = 38 Mhz.
OK

Step 2
Begin to raise the FSB by increments of 5 Mhz and test it with Prime95 and memtest86 until the machine becomes unstable. By unstable it creates rounding error in Prime95 or errors in memtest86. When the computer gets to be unstable with a high FSB, back it down slowly (2Mhz at a time) until the computer regains its stability with Prime95 and memtest86.
MY MOTHERBOARD HAS THE FOLLOWING IN THE ADVANCED SETTINGS

ASUS P4P800 DELUXE
1. AI TUNER----MANUAL
2. CPU EXTERNAL FREQUENCY---223MHZ(100-400)
3. DRAM FREQUENCY---266MHZ(266, 320, 400)
4. AGP/PCI--66.66/33.33
5. CPU VCORE VOTAGE--AUTO(15252V - 19500V)
6. DDR REFFERENCE VOLTAGE---AUTO(2.55, 2.65, 2.75, 2.85)
7. AGP VDDQ VOLTAGE---AUTO(1.50, 1.60,1.70, 1.80)
WHERE'S THE FSB SETTING?

Or try 2 x SuperPi to the 2M digit and 1 full benchmark of 3DMark2001SE on default settings (CooLJoE - System)

Step 3
Change your DRAM frequency: try 3:2 divider first, then 5:4. Set DDR Voltage to 2.80 (increase only if the system is unstable +0.025 at a time.)
MY CHOICES ARE 266, 320, 400? I DON'T SEE 3:2 OR 5:4!

Step 4
Test with Prime95 and 3D Mark 2001 (loop for 45min - 2hrs) if your system is stable. You will know it is unstable when Prime95 encounters a rounding error (or any error of that sort) or if 3DMark2001 dumps you back to the desktop in the middle of a benchmark.
OK

Step 5
To see if you can get more out of the CPU begin to raise the CPU's voltage, but do not go over 1.70v otherwise you will damage your CPU. Try 1.535 first, then go up +0.025 at a time.
OK

Step 6
Set Performance Mode: PAT to "Turbo" or "Ultra"
MY SYSTEM HANGS WHEN I DO THIS.

Step 7
Set CPU Config: Hyperthreading Technology to "on"
OK

Step 8
Set Chipset: Performance Acceleration Mode to "on"
HANGS

Step 8
Tweak Your RAM in BIOS

Automatic Configuration (DRAM Auto, Timing Selectable, Timing Configuring)
Options: on/off
--> set OFF

Nathan recommend to set 3-8-4-4

[1]-[2]-[3]-[4]

[1]CAS Latency tCL (CAS Latency Time, CAS Timing Delay): 3
[2]RAS-to-CAS Delay tRCD (RAS to CAS Delay, Active to CMD): 8
[3]RAS Precharge Time tRP (RAS Precharge, Precharge to active): 4
[4]Row Active Time tRAS (Active to Precharge Delay, Precharge Wait State, Row Active Delay, Row Precharge Delay): 4

MY MOTHERBOARDS CHIPSET MENU FEATURES THE FOLLOWING
DRAM CAS# LATENCY--3(2.0, 2.5, 3.0)
DRAM RAS# PRECHARGE--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM RAS# TO CAS# DELAY--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM PRECHARGE DELAY--8(5, 6 ,7 ,
DRAM BURST LENGTH--8(4,
DRAM IDLE TIMER--AUTO
DRAM REFRESH RATE--AUTO

HOW DO I GET 3-8-4-4?
IF I DO THIS IN ORDER I GET
3-4-4-8-8?
WHAT'S WRONG?

Bank Interleaving (Bank Interleave)
Options: Off/ 2/ 4
--> set 4
WHAT'S THIS?

Burst Length
Option: 4/ 8
--> set 8
OK

Command Rate CMD (Command Rate, MA 1T/2T Select)
Options: 1/ 2
--> set 1
WHERE IS THIS?

Step 9
Final test: Check your system with Prime95 and other benchmark programs if your system is stable. The temparture of your system should not exceed 50 C °, otherwise you need a better cooling system. IC7 temps tend to be 10-15 degrees higher, so i just subtract 10 from what the windbond hardware doctor shows as your current CPU temperature.
OK

Step 10 Optional
Overclock your graphics card and if you have use Raid 0.

Example by Nathan

Settings for maximum overclock: (With PC3200 Ram)
Memory Timings 3-8-4-4
Cpu Voltage 1.65
Memory Voltage: 2.8
Memory Divider: 3/2

ALRIGHT. I'M SORRY ABOUT THIS. I JUST NEED SOMEONE TO GET ME ON TRACK. PLUS THIS MAY HELP LOTS OF PEOPLE. THANKS NATHAN!

how can you adjust the frontside bus independently? When I adjust the cpu external frequency everthing goes up. ex. 213default raised to 223. 223 x 12=2676mhz
so if I want a stable clock of around 3.2ghz do I just raise the cpu external frequency to 266? what about the chipset menu? MY MOTHERBOARDS CHIPSET MENU FEATURES THE FOLLOWING
DRAM CAS# LATENCY--3(2.0, 2.5, 3.0)
DRAM RAS# PRECHARGE--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM RAS# TO CAS# DELAY--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM PRECHARGE DELAY--8(5, 6 ,7 , 8 )
DRAM BURST LENGTH--8(4, 8 )
DRAM IDLE TIMER--AUTO
DRAM REFRESH RATE--AUTO

can some one copy and paste this and put the corruct timings? the available options are in( ). it would be helpful. After playing chaser for a while It happened again last night. My cpu temp was at 46c. the mobo temp was a little less. Maybe that caused it?[img][/img]

Alexvdl - I'm pretty sure we all know what you meant, but just incase people didn't....

You meant to say "ALWAYS lock your AGP/PCI speed."

....not voltage

You want 3-8-4-4? Its right there in your settings that you listed. I'll put them in bold for you.

MY MOTHERBOARDS CHIPSET MENU FEATURES THE FOLLOWING
DRAM CAS# LATENCY--3(2.0, 2.5, 3.0)
DRAM RAS# PRECHARGE--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM RAS# TO CAS# DELAY--4(2, 3, 4)
DRAM PRECHARGE DELAY--8(5, 6 ,7 , 8 )
DRAM BURST LENGTH--8(4, 8 )
DRAM IDLE TIMER--AUTO
DRAM REFRESH RATE--AUTO

Those are the settings people talk about when they say #-#-#-#.

Here's a good information presentation that talks about memory basics and such. Would be a good read for those that don't understand timings, RAS, CAS, RAS to CAS, etc.

So I just looked again and I aready had the right timing. I feel stupid man. (Laugh out loud)

DRAM IDLE TIMER--AUTO
DRAM REFRESH RATE--AUTO
what about these? should I leave them on auto or set them to something specific?

My mistake. I actually had 2.5-8-4-4
when I tried 3-8-4-4 my system won't boot windows.
Why is this happening?
