Great read!
Consumers are definitely changing their spending habits and as cheap as memory is right now, it's an upgrade that just about anyone can afford and will give a noticeable increase in performance. |

Yea, the throw out mentiality is going away quickly and people are realising the brainwashed term "obsolete" is a joke.
As long as the computer does what you need done with no problems, it is never deemed out of date. _________________ Owner & Administrator

I've been saying the same thing for years. If it does what you need and you are happy with the speed at which it does it then why buy a new one?

Well written Nate. I think you touched on an important point; cloud computing. I work at a large university where access to our HPC servers is free. While I realize not everyone has this luxury, it has made me reconsider upgrading my own machine (a six-year old C640 that I obtained for free from an in-law who works in IT) since I only need an internet connection and a copy of putty and WinSCP to do everything I need. Cloud computing is certainly a great way to process computationally intensive jobs and spend relatively little money.
I wonder if more people are considering moving to a free OS as well such as linux, freeBSD, etc. Maybe some others here can comment on that. Being a linux noob I gravitated towards Ubuntu and I honestly now prefer it. I'll probably run virtual box so that I can still have xp around for a few windows-specific apps. Perhaps the poor economy and some of the issues with vista will be a good thing for linux? This is just speculation of course but maybe there are data available in terms of number of downloads of non-microsoft distros that negatively correlate with peoples incomes. |

I too have toyed with Ubuntu and i liked it, but it seemed to have random issues with compatibility here and there.
I also have been using Windows 7 and I have to say, it is the nicest OS I have used in a long time and it is quick as well. _________________ Owner & Administrator
