Here's my current setup. It's 2 years old and I figure it time for an upgrade.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 2000MHz
Asus A8N32-SLI_Dlx
2x (SLi) eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800 GT
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

I'm thinking of adding another 2GB of RAM and upgrading the CPU to the FX-60.

The Asus mobo is a 939 socket, so from what I've found (or haven't found), it limits the CPU selection a bit. The fastest CPU that I've found that would work is the FX-60. But it's going to cost me about $420 just for the CPU.

So now I'm considering if I should just get another mobo and cpu that would be equal or faster then my A8N32 and FX-60 combo.

Any suggestion?

Which would be better for the money?
1. Get the FX-60
or
2. Get a new mobo and cpu (which one?)

This is a question a lot of people are asking themselves lately. Personally, I couldn't recommend spending that much cash on a 393 platform. If you're using windows XP, 4 GB of memory won't do you much good either.

The biggest performance gains will be to move to C2D, but it entails DDR2 memory and an Nvidia chipset (680i, for instance) to keep your SLI.

Gotta run, but I'll post some recommendations later.

As I suspected, some careful shopping can get you a C2D processor, SLI motherboard and 2 gigs of DDR2 for around the same price as you would spend on the FX-60, if you can find one.

For instance: (and keep in mind that this was just a quick shopping trip without much research. Do your homework before you actually pull the trigger!)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor = $195
EVGA 122-CK-NF67-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX Intel Motherboard = $130 (after rebate)
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit = $55 (after rebate)

That's around $380 + shipping and you can probably use your other components (PSU, DVD, Vid cards etc.) By all accounts this chip will OC nicely and you'd have a very good performance boost.

Thank you for the help.

I haven't been keeping updated on the latest cpus/motherboards, but I knew for $400+ I could get something better then just the CPU upgrade.

I'll probably just make this machine a secondary and buy another machine to replace it as my main.

Thanks again!
