So when you guys go into your computer do you ground yourself with one of those wrist things or what?

Couldn't I use latex gloves or is that the wrong idea?

I never use a grounding strap at home or at work. I always touch the case of a computer while it is plugged in before I work on it to eliminate any static charge on me. I also make it a point to stay in one spot while working to avoid building up static. This method has always served me well, even at home on my carpeted floor. I wouldn't bother with latex gloves, unless you need to give a prostate exam at the same time...

I pretty much do the same as Sandness. Static caused hardware failure is a lot less common than it used to be and even in the past it was rare. That being said, some people build up more static than others. If you are one of those people then take all the precautions you can before working on your kit. The latex gloves idea won't do you any good. It will just make things more difficult to work on. Usually touching a grounded chasis periodicaly will be sufficient to dispel static buildup. If you are one of those people that had great fun zapping people with static growing up and still get zapped by the ocasional door handle then get a strap, you can never be too safe and they only cost a couple of $.

Patience will save more failures than any antistatic device, most human caused failure I have seen has been due to impatient rushed jobs. Take your time, read the manual and do it right

Thanks guys. I have done some work inside my computer with and without wearing a strap but now its dry winter in Minnesota and I'm shocking my case every other time I touch it (carpeted floor too).

Then get yourself a strap dude

Its better to be over cautious than to fry something.
