AMD has lost large amounts of money in Q1 of this year. Intel's price war it really hurting AMD, and will probably force them to outsource chip manufacturing. If this continues, us the consumers wil be in trouble. Intel will no longer have to innovate and come out with new technology, and can also raise prices if AMD cannot come out with a product. Intel sure has gotten back online. Discuss what you think. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

I think AMD's talks with Nvidia should be accelerated. There is a good chance the new chip technology they can offer will take graphics computing to a whole new level. This would beneficial to both companies. It would also provide AMD with a larger source of alternate source of income. If AMD is smart, I think we're going to see them start tapping into other chip markets. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

yeah, but the only problem now is designers and engineers from ATI are being pulled to different projects, not pertaining to the GPU's. They are being moved to chipsets and etc. I think that is a reason why we are seeing a delay in the release of the R600 (which was redesigned on a smaller process and will include a built in sound card and HDMI interface). I think the company is in trouble as of right now. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

They very well could be. But I know they were trying very hard and coming very close from a couple of articles I read, to integrate video and sound card technology into an all-in-one unit while reducing heat output. If they can get it ready for production, and be able to affordably produce it before anyone else, they should see an increase in numbers.
It would be phenomenal if they could design the technology to perform, and economically make sense, for motherboard manufacturers to have integrated onto their boards. People would eat it up if they could buy one affordable piece of equipment that allowed them to avoid purchasing two other expensive pieces of equipment just to produce the same type of experience.
All of this is speculation of course. At least until we start seeing press releases concerning functional technology that they're ready to start rolling out instead of what they're attempting to accomplish. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

I know the heat issue is becoming last of a problem. I think some of the HD2900XT(X) will be based on 65nm process, which will allow them to run cooler and suck less power than their NVidia counterparts. And your right. If they can incorporate HDMI and all the other features of the graphics card into an onboard chip, they will prob take back the HTPC market, and also gain more marketshare into the entry level market, and finally compete with Intel. But rumor has it, intel is working on a new onboard gpu that will utilize DX10, and is supposed to be pretty descent, better than what they've done with onboard in the past. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

I was reading about that 65nm. Apparently the new XBox 360 Elite is also supposed to be using that technology.
Either or, it's not looking great for AMD right now, but I wouldn't count them out. They were able to grow from a sapling to a tree all while having the sun blocked by Intel's overcasting shadow. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

The fact that they are a bit behind atm tells me that they have something big planned, I've seen it time and time again. Bare in mind that the development time for new tech is years, intel had the P4 planned and in testing when they released the first socketed p3. I am sure AMD has had something on the burn since long before they bought out ATI and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that actually fitted into their dev plan. I smell something big, 64bit big on the wind. Intel has been pushing dual core and the like hard and before that they were pushing the MHZ barriers whilst amd snuck in with 64bit CPUs. Intel then had to rush to catch up. Keep an eye open _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

I agree that they have been quiet for a while, and they might have something, the only problem is they are behind in process technology, intel is already on the way to 45nm, and AMD is just getting 65nm, and that a lot of people are becoming annoyed with the constant delays, and the quiet behavior they have had. Recently, R600, and Barcelona, as well as another new ATI chipset were displayed in Tunisia. However, because of NDA's (which breaking is punishable by death in the country), no one can show benchmarks or talk about what was seen there. There arent any reliable benches or even pictures of a loaded barcelona. (R600 has been benched, I think) I dont even think ES's are out for people to test yet. And yes, the Xbox 360 is moving to 65nm. The new elite features the 65nm chips, and eventually will become mainstream, so best not to spend the money on the elite system now.
One other note, I think there is something that is 128 bit in barcelona, Im not sure what it is though. The entire processor is not 128 bit though.
The Barcelona is going to be a good processor, but if they keep delaying, they will still be behind because intel will be moving to 45 nm processors with High-K barriers, reducing power consumption, and increasing efficiency.
I am enjoying this, more people are becoming involved, and it is becoming an intelligent debate _________________ P4 3.2ghz

This is latest news that I have run into concerning AMD and what they have planned. It seems that they purposely aren't giving much information on what they're developing. I can't wait for them to start releasing the new chips so we can read some benchmarks.
