Title says it all. I have Windows Vista, and I'd like to install it, but my system will not boot from DVD, for some reason. The BIOS gets that far, then just sits there, with no boot. I can "upgrade" from within XP, but I'd really rather not do that.

Any ideas? DVD drive is set as Primary IDE slave, I suppose I could set it to master, on the secondary IDE channel, but I'd rather not goof around with my system too much if I don't have to.

And before you ask, yes, this is a LEGAL copy of Vista. Microshaft has been less than helpful, no surprise there.

Is it a full disk or just the upgrade copy.

It's a full version, not upgrade. I want to be able to do a clean install. I haven't tried any other DVD's, just Vista. It's the only bootable DVD I have. I'll try a CD later on today and see what happens. Might be an issue with my mobo, too........I sortof damaged it a little bit during the last case test.......

Boot with a boot flash drive to dos and start the install manually.

I don't think this is a motherboard problem. Maybe you should check your jumper and channel settings for the drive.

I thought of that first, jumpers are set correctly. I've also reset the BIOS to default settings, still no go. I've only let it sit for a minue or so, though. I may just let it sit for awhile, and see if it just takes a few minutes to boot.

I'm getting another mobo and a Prescott 3.0ghz proc that I can test with, the guy I'm getting it from will verify that Vista boots before he sends it to me. That way I can rule out mobo problems from the start.

This one has me stumped.

Oh, and I can boot from regular CD just fine. It only appears that I can't boot from a DVD.

Let it sit for a little more than a minute or two. On my rig, asus server board with 2 dual core opterons it took probably 10 minutes to load. Ive actually gone back to XP though and put vista on my old rig just to play with it. Configuration sucks. I still cant remote desktop to it.

also try what nathan said and attempt to run the setup through DOS.

It may just be timing out looking for something.

sorry for the double post.

A couple more ideas for some troubleshooting.
Make a BartPE DVD and see if you can boot from that. If you are able to boot from that then I believe your problem lies within the hardware.

**** Try this first though: Make sure that you have the latest BIOS update from your mobo manufacturer. There have been a lot of reported problems with reboot cycles and installations not working that have been cured by the latest BIOS.
