After Reading THIS, you'll NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!

Bananas Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work?
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:
Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:
According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Most of that I knew, from my hardcore mountain biking days. Three things you were guaranteed to find at food stops at races, and at almost every pre-race meal table: pasta (high in long lasting carbs), peanut butter sandwiches (vitamins, and the base peanut oils help retain fluid to a degree.....not to mention filling without being heavy) and bananas. One guy I knew used to ride with a thermal cooler filled with a whole banana smoothie, for mid-ride bonk syndrome.

I wonder if that means the same as it does here in the UK??? (I've been laughing for nearly five mins, non-stop!)
In the UK we'd just use Viagra!

OKAYYYY......Back to topic....:

Bananas are radioactive! Bananas are a good dietary source of potassium, However, 0.0117% of natural potassium is the radioactive isotope
40 K (Potasium -40), which decays by beta particle emission with a half-life of 1.26 x 10 -9 years, but a biological half-life of 30 days. All bananas are radioactive enough to register on a lab grade Geiger counter, A large banana has an activity of about 18.4 Bq (becquerel, equal to one disintegration or nuclear transformation per second), or 0.511 nCi (nanocuries). As a comparison, the americium in a typical smoke detector has an activity of 0.9 microcuries, or the equivalent of about 1800 bananas.

Bananas have caused problems with security scanners in the US as the detectors were being triggered by the potasium-40, mind you CAT LITTER was also triggering alerts. Maybe the scanners are a little TOO sensitive then? unless terrorists plan to dettonate the worlds first high yield cat litter moderated banana?

Bananas are NOT FRUIT!!! Seems odd, but true! Bananas are infact a member of the Herb family, and the banana is the world largest herb! Often wrongly described as a tree, the banana is, in fact, a giant herbaceous plant with a 'trunk' (or more correctly a pseudostem) made up of a series of tightly wrapped leaf sheaths.

Well thats all I can think of for now, other than the fact I have three Banana plants growing in my back yard (Bananas growing in the North East of England?? and they say Global warming doesn't exist! ).

Radioactive, SS? Are you sure they aren't..?

Ok Ok, back to some facts :
The world's most popular fruit originated in the region of Malaysia. The fruit then traveled to India where they were mentioned in the Buddhist Pali writings dating back to the 6th century. Alexander the Great is creditied with bringing the banana from India to the Western world, and apparently relished his first taste of this fruit. While China was tending bananas as early as 200 CE, the fruit was considered exotic, rare fruits that never became popular with the masses until the 20th century.
Bananas then traveled to Africa, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean Island of Santo Domingo (1516), and Central America. The first fruit was very small, unlike today's eight to twelve inch giants, about the size of a finger - thus the name banan (Arabic for finger). The Spaniards saw a similarity to the plane tree that grows in Spain and gave the plantain its Spanish name - platano.

In 1876 - almost 350 years later - Americans tasted the first bananas to arrive here. Wrapped in tin foil, bananas were sold for 10 cents each at a celebration held in Pennsylvania to commemorate the hundreth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence! Banana instructions on how to eat the fruit appeared in the Domestic Cyclopaedia of Practical Information: "Bananas are eaten raw, either alone or cut in slices with sugar and cream, or wine and orange juice. They are also roasted, fried or boiled, and are made into fritters, preserves, and marmalades."

Bananas are considered almost prefect fruit due to their high nutritional components: Vitamins C (and complex), A, B (complex) and potassium. As a healthy food, our certified organic bananas are affordable for all, and contain health benefits for children and adults.

Someone recently described the wonderful flavor of our certified organic bananas as:.."like the bananas I remember when I was growing up"

I can see why this guy is wearing a mask,,,, truly horrible..

Here's a few more cool things about bananas:

Bone Mass Decay In Salt Eaters - A study at the University of California at San Francisco discovered that "The potassium [found in bananas] appears to counteract the bad effects of high-salt diets by preventing bones from decaying at a fast rate."

Strokes -- A study of 5,600 people revealed that those with the lowest intakes of potassium were 50% more likely to suffer a stroke. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that adding banana to your regular diet can cut the risk of death by stoke by as much as 40%.

Ugliness - The Body Shop uses some 250,000 bananas each year in the manufacture of its beauty products. In Central America, mashed bananas are used to relieve dry skin. Other homespun banana beauty treatments include exfoliating masks (blend mashed bananas with cosmetic clay), hair conditioner (combine mashed banana with a few drops of almond oil) and hand moisturizing lotion (mash a banana with 2 pats of butter).

A banana a day keeps the doctor away... and the dermatologist...and the psychologist... and if current research can be trusted... death. It seems there's almost no ailment that the banana can't help cure. The word "banan" is Arabic for finger.

Please forgive this one:

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, "Crushed nuts?"
"No," he replied. "Arthritis."
