Random problems at startup

Hello everyone,

I'm running Windows XP Home on the following PC:

the only thing I've added is a ATI Radeon 9800 PRO graphics card and I've installed SP2.

For some time now I have been experiencing a variety of issues at startup. Even after formatting my hardrive it isn't long before it starts acting up. For instance, I just recently formatted my hardrive and already I get totally random errors and stuff when I start windows. Sometimes, after loading windows I'll just get a black screen with the cursor in the center and nothing happens, other times I'll get a message saying that it can't tell whether my copy of windows is legitimate (it is) and it won't let me logon, I get all different kinds of problems at startup, sometimes it'll just restart right after the BIOS. Sometimes I get lucky and it'll behave normally on the first try but it often takes several tried for a succesful startup.

I'm really curious about what could be causing this problem. What really boggles my mind is how seemingly random it all is, different things seem to happen each time I startup, sometimes I'll get the same problem a couple times in a row and then after restarting a fifth time, for example, it'll start up perfectly! Does it sound like a hardware problem? I don't know if it could be related to my OS because Windows XP came installed on this HP machine and I didn't install it myself...

Any help would be appreciated as I would like to put an end to the problem I've had for so long now and I'm also very curious to find the explanation of how the behavior appears to be so random when really there's nothing 'random' about the way a computer operates (with the exception from the memory sometimes from what I understand)...

Well, these problems could be related to a number of things. The first obvious thing is something related to your graphics card and/or drivers. This is a mature card, so the drivers should be relatively stable. Are they the latest drivers? Installing drivers without removing older versions can cause problems as well.

If I'm not mistaken, the 9800 Pro needs additional power from the PSU via a 4-pin molex connector. Make sure it's securely attached. This may also be pushing the limits of the PSU.

I had similar issues with a family members box, and it turned our to be some bad caps on the motherboard. Very random issues that continued to worsen with time. You should visually examine the caps (capacitors) carefully to verify that they aren't swelled or leaking. They are the cylindrical items soldered to the mobo and there are a lot of them. This photo shows some bad caps on the board that I had to replace:

The tops of the caps should be flat, not bulged as in the photo. Sometimes a brownish material is leaking out. If you see any evidence of swelled or leaking caps, you may have found your problem.

i would also run memtest 86. google it and burn it to a cd. Then run it off boot. If you get memory errors while running it then theres a good chance that one of the sticks of memory in the computer is dying. On startup, there would be a lot of information going through those sticks, as it starts up and loads your programs. that might be the problem.

Good suggestions, just to add, check the 9800's temperature. I've also seen a reboot kind of problem from an overheat on those old vid boards. (like a failed fan)

How did you format your harddrive....but still be on the same OS build from the factory?

Hey 2old! Glad you remember me :)
I checked the caps and they're fine.
I made sure everything was properly connected to the video card.
I haven't checked the temperature of the card yet (I'll have to look up how to do it)
I've installed the latest drivers from ATI for my card.
I ran Memtest without probs.
I used system restore to restore back to a point about a week ago before I began having certain problems and those problems (not ALL problems) were no more.


Thing were fine for about a day until I ran Ad-aware which found SearchFast which had a TAC rating of 5 (high) so I deleted that, it also found a tracking cookie with a TAC rating of 3 (medium) so I deleted that, and it also found MRU files which don't pose a threat but that I delete anyway because its just stuff like lists of recently opened files and so on.
The odd thing is that I've tried system restore several times and each time I delete the thing ad-aware finds (the same things every time) I end up getting certain problems (illegal operations at startup and I get that thing where you can't see the wallpaper on the desktop anymore and you ave to click on restore my active desktop). I get the active desktop error after rebooting each time but when I click on restore my active desktop I get an error message...

I know I could simply do another system restore back to the good point I was talking about and just not run ad-aware but I don't like keeping those things it find on my computer without knowing what they are...
Any suggestions?

Togglehead: the reason why I can format my harddrive and have the OS at its manufactured state is because I do the HP-version of a format which is one of those procedures where you have 7 CDs which re-install windows...
I don't actually own Windows XP cds or anything because it came installed on the PC.

Hm... well i would start by clearing all the spyware on your system and see if that fixes the problem.

Turn off system restore and try the following, you can turn it back on once we go through your hijack this log.

Go to www.majorgeeks.com
download spybot search and destroy
also download hijack this
and cs shredder.

Update all of them, run spy bot, followed by adaware followed by cs schredder. Then restart the computer and run hijack this and post the log that you get here in your thread. Well look over it for you.

Not trying to discourage you but with the HP cds. It doesnt actually reformat your hard drive completely. If you have a spyware client that has embedded itself in the files that remain when doing a new install,( i believe there is a D: drive with reinstall information that is just hidden in the control panel) then were going to have to find out exactly what bug it is, and follow special directions to remove it.

I wouldn't waste anymore time and do a removal of the partition, rebuild the partitition, then a full format (not a quick one).

Then install everything again fresh. This is the only way to get these problems out and will actually by quicker than trying this and that to solve the problem.

The problem with that nathan is that he doesnt have a real xp disk. I had an hp a long while back. If you wipe it completely clean with a full format, then you will not be able to reinstall windows xp using the disks that come with the computer. You have to buy a real copy of xp. The partition that is left on the computer, D drive, tells the disks how to reinstall windows using the cds.

the hp my dad has now actually has the windows install on the other partition. and if you restore or anything it reads the files directly from the drive.

Right........in most cases, the "restore CDs" don't even have a full copy of XP on them. The actual install software is on that hidden partition, the CDs only tell the machine where to install things, along with all the "value added" software that comes with prebuilt rigs. The only way to do what Nathan is suggesting is to buy a full copy of XP..........

ok, delete the 5 or 6 bold ones. They arnt spyware, just not needed. Like nathan said, go through and get rid of the hp bloat ware unless you use it.

next step would be to download cw shredder. run it.
because nothing was out of the ordinary in your log, you might be looking at bad memory or another hardware problem.

also, what exactly are your error messages saying.
