well, I have the one gig kit by Patriot as listed in my sig, and it is no longer sold... my question is if I pick a matching kit from OCZ (same timings\ voltage) will I be ok? or should I contact patriot and see if then can directly sell me a leftover kit or something...

Yup. ^^^

Brand of RAM matters only a tiny bit. As long as they're identical timings and speed, you'll be fine. Only the hardcore OC'er will notice the difference between chips, and I mean the hardest of the hardcore.

Even the timings are not all that important, provided your system is set to the looser timimg. Its always better to have matched RAM but if you can't, always try and get as close as you can. Something I have noticed is that mixing single sided RAM and 2 sided RAM (location of memory chips, on one or both sides of the stick) has given problems, even with the same specs otherwise. Also make sure the RAM is the same voltage as your current RAM, OCZ often use a higher voltage on their RAM so if the set you are looking at is higher voltage than your current RAM then look for another brand.
