I'm becoming more and more of an Ubuntu fan all the time.

Well I haven't tried DSL yet, but I've heard many good things. That'll be something I'll delve into next. Sounds solid, literally.
I'm with you on the loading off disk part, though. Even Ubuntu has that option, and you can basically have a really secure system with you anywhere there's a CD Rom drive and 256mgs of ram.

I think with Vista coming out in a short little bit, there's going to be quite a few people who are going to start wondering what "best OS is ever." Some people will undoubtedly say it's Vista, while others will start reconsidering their options.
I don't think there's a right answer to this question, at least not in the foreseeable future. Every OS has its own strengths and weaknesses, and it's mostly personal preferences that's the deciding factor; that, or, even more significant, not knowing that there are alternatives.

I agree with you TeeJay on Ubuntu. I'm using the server version with a GUI and I really like it. I'm using it for a bioinformatics server and since I'm having to use my Unix again Linux was an easy transition.

I'm considering putting it on my laptop too but have to check if I can use SAS on a linux box.
