Hi guys, to start off my PC SPECS:
DELL Dimension 8400
P4 3.0ghz
1 gb ram
nvidia 6800 gto 256mb pci-e card
OK, the problem. Last saturday i got Elder Scrolls IV :Oblivion, and when i began playing it,my card reached the 135 C threshold which shut the card down.
I contacted dell and they determined the card was faulty and sent me a refurbished one. Since putting in the new card, It runs at 75 C when idle. SEEMS HIGH TO ME. and when playing games it gets up to 100 C. When the card passes by the 94C point, it always has artifacts that are wedge shaped all over the screen.
I even bought a pci slot fan card. Anyone have anything i should check or anything to add on this issue? im sure im forgetting to add something in here.

BUMP*
Does anyone have anything to add? I mean GPU ambient temp being 53C when i turn my pc on for the first time in 8 hours is bull crap. maybe 31C or something more along those lines. since it is summer time. Still no word from dell either. Their Tech support rocks!

What kind of case cooling do you have?

What is the case temp at idle?

What is the ambient room temp?

I think he has that wonderful ducted Dell cooling setup, with the passive CPU heatsink and 80mm rear fan........which really restricts overall case cooling.

For comparison, my P4 2.8C with an Antec Performance HSF, an 80mm intake and 120mm exhaust runs 36C idle right now, or a touch more, and ambient room temp is around 80F.

My X800GT runs at around 60C at idle, which is normal. Video cards run hot, and depending on which brand of 6800 you have, the cooling solution might not be the best. You could actually be experiencing overheating VRAM (GDDR) which will also lead to artifacting, and if you don't have a cooling setup that also handles the VRAM chips, your case temps might be causing the problem.
