I just learn about the K&N filter and there are good and bad talks about it. If you have some experience about this brand name, please share.

Thank you

From what I've seen, they are not worth the money (assuming you mean a drop in factory replacement). Most "extra power" you get (or trick yourself into thinking this) is no different than the feel you get from dropping in a clean new paper filter.

Also, they don't save you money. For approx. $30 initially and about $8 per cleaning kit, that would buy you more paper filters than you'd ever use.

If you are referring to the filter charger kits, I couldn't say one way or the other.

Thank you for your suggestion. Although I just start researching about this matter (basically reading reviews) but it seems to me what you said is correct.
Let's wait for some more discussions. I do not trust very much those reviews online (just do not know why :)). In the other hand, I do trust the review on newegg

For the price, you technically never have to buy another filter again.

I personally use them on all my vehicles and wash, reoil and reuse them yearly.

Never had one problem with them and you never have to waste throwing a paper filter out again. They do flow better than the stock paper filter.

Best bet is to buy one cheap off of ebay and enjoy it for the rest of the life of your car.

Thx Nathan for the input. I just can not get it. Just thing of wash the filter and reuse it. As I understood, the K&N filter use some kind of oiled-material to trap
the dust while still provide good air flow while the paper one sacrifies the airflow to make sure it trap more dust. The explaination is kind of make sense, although not completely convince me :). But after you wash it, you also wash the oil out. This reall bothers me

As I said in my post, you wash and reoil.

Sorry, I did not make my point clearly What type of oil do you use? How do you reoil it?

K&N airfilters are great filters. (IMO) I have one in my jeep and my Nova. Good thing is as Nathan said " ...you technically never have to buy another filter again.". As for performance wise....yes they are good if you have a high performance car or truck that sucks in alot of air to accellerate [< sorry about spelling] But for a normal vehical....I dont think you'll see or feel much of a difference. And the oil....K&N sells a "Recharge Kit" to clean your filter. http://www.knfilters.com/clningacc.htm It comes with the cleaning solvent and the oil spray to put on after you clean the crap off it. The way it works is that the special oil clings to the wire and cotton mesh, and as the air flows through, the dirt and dust gets cought in the wire cotton mesh with oil. but the cool thing is that the oil wont let the dirt stick to the wire cotton mesh permenetly.....So that way you can wash it of with the cleaner. If you were to clean an K&N air filter and not put that oil back on, it can ruin the filter. Think of the oil as scotch guard for fabrics. If you spill coke or juice on a rug with scotch guard, you can clean the spill better.....And have less chance of a stain cause the scotch guard didnt let the drink penetrate in to the fibers. So with that said the oil is what holds the dirt so that way it can be washed off and reapplied, thus making the filter reuseable.
Hope this was any help.

At higher engine rpms yes I do see a difference.

This is where most paper filters start to restrict airflow.

Most Cotton gauze filters only have you seeing a difference at higher engine speeds.

No ttoo mention, they mostly provide better throttle response, as opposed to "more power"

I use them in BOTH my cars, and i ran paper filters in both of them as well. There was a noticable difference in throttle response and a cleaner FEELING drive....maybe its because i drive a german vehicle (not like that should make a diff)...but i swear by them.

I use them in all my vehicles. They provide great filtration and low restriction. The thing I like most about them is the fact that you can re-use them almost indefinitely (with proper care). I've also found that the K&N elements can go far more miles between service than the paper units marketed by the competion. I like K&N oil filters, too.

I thing I can buy the explaination of Noxide . Everything now seems to be clear when you all said the difference is noticeable at high rpm. Thank you all of you for the discussion

I won't waste my money on one again. If you properly maintain your vehicle you will have the same performance gains as what you would see with the K&N FIPK. Besides the paper filters the dust better than what a K&N does.
I have used K&N on and off for the last 11 years. On my '70 chevelle it was worth it. On the '74 ford F100 it was iffy but I sitll did it. On my '96 Grand Cherokee I am regretting the purchase of the kit.

With all of that said I will now say this; if you have other performance upgrades such as a performance intake and a free flowing exhaust you will notice some increase. But if the vehicle is mostly stock you will notice more noise from the intake. And alot of people report a drop in mpg after they are first installed. This is mostly due to the fact that they are enjoying the performance sound coming from the new filter.

Thanks, KoG]^weaZel. It seems that there are many more other factors that affect the performance other than this filter :). I will keep asking around for the statistic

This does matter.....some cars will be more likely to see gains.

I also use a K&N.... cheapest performance upgrade out there. Like people said.. it won't give you the kind of horsepower that putting decals on your car might (lol), but it will give you a cleaner ride and better gear transitions w/the throttle open.

$45 for not having to replace an air filter again??? Uhhh yeah.

They explain on the box... from just normal care of a car, you'll end up spending about $150 in air filters on the life of your car, as opposed to $45 once which will outperform ordinary air filters every time.

Although it could potentially save you money over many years, how long do you think you'll keep this Corolla? I'd venture to guess no more than 5-6 years. Its likely your next car won't use the same filter. So in reality, it won't save you money. And, in that mean 1.8L beast, it will probably sound a bit better without really gaining noticeable power. I wouldn't bother.

I guess the best strategy to save money is whenever you need to replace the original liter from, you use a K&N filter or whatever reuseable filter :)
