Hello,

I just built a new rig and contained in it are 2 WD 74GB Raptors. Right now i have 1 drive doing OS and all applications and such, other drive is a dump drive for games, mp3's, movies etc.

RAID 0 is obviously faster then having these guys run in singles like they are right now, but, it isn't redundant at all. I had 2 Seagate Barracuda's running in a RAID 0 and 1 drive failed...then i put it in a raid 1 array and 1 failed and while i brought that one to the store to get replaced over the counter, the second drive failed and i came home to a computer with nothing on it.

My 1st question is this:

Should i put these in a RAID 0 array or wait a bit until i can get 2 more and do a RAID 0+1 with these babies?

My 2nd question is:

I will notice a significant difference with these in a RAID 0 won't i?

Q2 first....you'll notice a slight increase in speed in raid0, in average computing. But, you say you store video and such on your second drive, so assuming you write in and out of the drives quite a bit, you'll see an increase in data writes.

Q1: Sounds to me like you want to run R0 and create two partitions.
Likewise, coming up with a good backup/imaging method practiced routinely, will minimize data loss possibilities.
Running R1 is not as useful now days, as your experience shows. The HDDs are so consistant that they tend to fail at nearly the same time, and nearly always last the warranty period. Also, with the internet being dangerous as it is, you also tend to end up with two copies of the trojan or malware or such, and both drives end up needing reloaded. So the answer again is....backup, backup and backup.

man that is alot of info to backup. i guess i would do everything except like game installs and stuff because that is just a waste of space on a backup...Do you back up to DVD or to tape drive?

If you have a program such as NERO, backup to a DVD will be fine. You can create a backup with nero, or the windows utility, but with windows, you would need to save the file, and then burn.

I used to use DVD. Now I only use a DVD for an image of the OS. Now I use an external HDD. The USB adapter is like $20 and you can pick up 200GB HD's for fairly cheap.

I have an old IDE hard drive that i could store a drive image on...hmmm...does it copy hidden and system files too? no sense doing an image that won't copy everything...is there some sort of freeware or cheap software that will image everything and let me store the image on another hard drive in the system?

like norton ghost or something? then can't you just get the image back by booting with a floppy?
