Hi. I am new to the forum. I wonder if anyone has any ideas. I have a new Sony SDM-S81 LCD. Yeah I know a little slow on the response time however I can live with it until they are better than CRT refresh rates! Only woe is the Properties/advanced/monitor menu for the screen only shows 60 hz when the hide what the monitor can't display box is checked. The monitor will do 1280x1024 at 85 hz in the spec's.(one of the factory presets) Why don't I run it as plug and play ?(ps. got DDC unchecked) Because I get an out of sync effect that looks like "shimmering down the screen" and it will only do 60 hz.
Unchecking DDC allows me to set 85 hz at native 1280x1024 and the effect disappears. No worries if playing a game in a window but when in full screen mode I get the shimmering. I have an ATI 9500 PRO, Intel 865 PERLL mobo, 1 gig Kingston pc3200, 120 gig SATA. The connection to the monitor only allows RGB and not DVI. I am not a computer Braniac and not sure what to try next. Thanks for any help in advance.
Glenn

you need to download a utility to lock the refresh rates while gaming.

Do a google search under "ati refresh rate program"

I downloaded an ATI tweaker for the card and set the card to 1280x1024 at 85 hz. (rec native res and vert freq) and it solved the problem. Initially though I went back and mucked about with the monitor refresh after tweaking it (Tried DDC. Duh) and it really screwed things up. I had to completely dump the ati driver and reinstall to get screen centering and the fuzziness out of it. That worked and re ran the tweaker. Set everything to 85 hz and it runs sweet. Thanks a lot for your help!.
P.S would I be able to have the DDC checked and not worry about having to lock the freq if ATI had a better Catalyst Driver for this card? It still only believes that the monitor is stuck at 60 hz. Also it was interesting to me that after running the tweaker initially it showed the vertical refresh for 1280x1024 at 43 hz! Is this why the factory preset of 60 hz was so crappy?
Thanks again
Glenn
