hey guys, i just got a 4x proc intel pent III Xeon 700mhz processor Dell poweredge 6400/7700 server, installed windows server 2003 on it, everything runs well, except when i try to set up the server for internet use, well the internet actually works fine. i mean im tyring to have other people from the internet (outside my home network) connect to it, im trying to set up an FTP site, because i think its probably the easiest to start with. i have a few files that are for testing,....

so this is what i did, first i created the site and told the server to publish it, and it did, anyone within my home network can get to the FTP site just punching in the IP Address into explorer. its set for allowing anonymous logins, and i am behind a linksys wired router, everytime some one outside the network tries to connect to the FTP site they get a "timed out trying to contact FTP://192.16x.xxx.xxx port 21" etc, AND all of the computers on my network lose internet connection breifly, then it becomes re-stablished... contacted linksys, completely useless, all they could tell me was i need to configure the router for port triggering .. so i did and allowed for port 21, i just wonder if anyone has some helpful info,? ive scoured the web for 3 days now and ill i can find is microsofts same old help files, which describe exactly how to set up a server... not how to configure it with a router... lol, so any help would be apreciated. thanks

That's the first and foremost thing to check.

Find out if your ISP blocks all incoming direct traffic. This includes port 21, port 25 (email) and port 80 (web server) among others. For myself, Verizon has me behind a proxy server, so no direct connections are available. Some ISP's only block "server designated" ports, which is relatively easy to bypass.........but you'll be risking losing your ISP due to breaking the TOS.

You might also want to check this link:

ok, so ive checked with my ISP bell sympatico, they have no rules or regulations i have to follow when using a server, wether it be for file sharing or w/e i want, they actually dont block ANY ports, all ports are open, and i have no bandwidth cap/limit, so im good to go in terms of that, i tried every possible configuration of port forwarding i can, still nothing, im gonna try a direct link to my server later today, if anyone has any ideas about this damn linksys BEFsr41 router, or how to configure it, thanks.
